The Brighton National Guard was organized on February 14, 1912. The unit was originally known as the Colorado Springs National Guard. It was increased in size to a regiment by November 1912 and then again to a brigade by February 1913. On October 15, 1917, the regiment became an independent brigade and is still headquartered in Brighton today. On July 1, 1919, the Brighton Brigade became part of the newly constituted Colorado National Guard and until 1951 it continued to be headquartered in Brighton. The brigade headquarters moved from Colorado Springs to Greeley on September 3, 1951 and then finally to Fort Collins on December 5, 1951. On March 24, 1955 all brigades were disbanded and their personnel absorbed into other units within the newnational guard structure. Many new businesses were born out of this increased economic activity including American Weigh & Stroll which became one of the largest grocery stores in North America; Hostess corporations such as KFC and Coca Cola; architectural firms such as Jardin & Hunt; trucking companies like US West Logistics Inc.; mutual funds including OppenheimerFunds Incorporated; and engineering firms such as Bicknell & Partners Limited (now known as DTN Associates). The earliest documented inhabitants of what is now Brighton were Arapaho Indians who lived along present day I-70 until 1838 when they were forced off their land by settlers with guns and horses. In 1869, Ute Indian Chief Washakie surrendered his holdings north of I-70 east of Aspen Creek for $4 million dollars to white settlers under the Treaty Of Park City. This treaty ceded all Native American land betweenAspen Creek east of Overland Avenue south to Pikes Peak Boulevard westward except for some parcels that still remain part Indian Territory today including those near Aspen Creek Reservoir on Park City's eastern border with Thornton Ranch. On July 17th 1890 Wm Hite platted what would become known as Windsor Township northwest side Of Downtown Boulder later renamed Brighton after himself
The National Guard has been around since the Revolutionary War. One of the earliest units was organized in 1775 as part of the Continental Army. The Guard was reactivated during World War II as a patriotic response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1945, the Guard was converted into a reserve force and played no significant role in American wartime policy. However, following the end of World War II, many Guardsmen were called up for service in Korea and Vietnam. After President Lyndon Johnson ordered their mobilization for these wars, the Guard saw its first combat on September 11th, 1964 when soldiers from New York City's 1st Battalion Combat Infantry Regiment served in Khan Yunis Province, Syria against Viet Cong insurgents. The Guard also fought in Operation Just Cause against Nicaragua and subsequent operations throughout Central America and Caribbean peacekeeping missions until 1995-1996 when they were disbanded effective February 15th due to budget cuts at that time. In 2003, Congress authorized an all-volunteer force known as "the National Guard" which would be made up of components from state militias and county sheriff's departments across the country with a goal of providing support to federal law enforcement activities if needed. This all volunteer force is now estimated at 50 million Americans who are mobilized each year under both state and federal laws. The National guard can trace its history back to 1775 when General George Washington authorization called for a militia company composed exclusively of men from Connecticut to be raised for defense against French forces occupying that state during the war effort. Since then there have been numerous changes to how national guard troops are used within our society including deployments abroad (eastern Europe after 9/11; Iraq),911 protests (New York City police officers deployed outside city limits), homeland security (encompassing counterterrorism efforts since 9/11), various natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina or Sandy; and more recent efforts such as Operation Eagle Shield which involved military personnel working alongside local police departments throughout Alabama in order to provide preventative security measures during large sporting events like Auburn University's football game against Clemson University on October 6th, 2012
