The Colorado Air National Guard's 6th Fighter Wing, stationed in Canon City, is the only active duty USAF fighter wing in Colorado. The wing was activated on 7 October 1949 as the 5th Fighter Squadron, flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft. It was redesignated the 6th Fighter Wing on 28 August 1957 and assigned to RAF Valley airbase, England. After several years of operations at Valley, the squadron relocated to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, England in 1963 and again flew Lockheed P-38s. The squadron disbanded on 1 September 1969 when its aircraft were transferred to the Air National Guard of New Zealand. The 914th Tactical Airlift Group (914TAG) was activated at McConnell AFB, Kansas on 18 May 1951 as part of Air National Guard Command's activation of all Continental United States airlift capabilities for Operations Inland Empire and Korean War purposes. The group operated C-47 Skytrain transports from McConnell AFB between 1951 and 1960; it also flew Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers during this time period. On 15 May 1960, the 914TH became an element of Twelfth Air Force when it was moved from McConnell AFB to Waco Army Airport Texas after a brief assignment with Eighth Air Force at al Nakba Military airfield near Baghdad panties Iraq; that same day KC-135Cs replaced C-47s as mainstays of USAF mobile reserve forces during Operation Desert Storm). Inactivated on 15 January 1971 when its assets were reassigned to Travis AFB California; however examples continued to fly with 914TH until 14 March 1983 when they were grounded due to engine failure while performing a training exercise at Robins AFB Georgia On 3 November 1984the unit received their final USAAF jet aircraft deliveries: two Convair CF-18 Hornet jets which arrived from Davis–Monthan AFB Arizona The 914TH transitioned onto new aircraft starting with F/A-18 Hornets then transitioned onto F/A-18E Super Hornet jets late in 2006
