Coffee has been around for centuries, and in Canon City, Colorado, it is now a cherished tradition. The city’s history dates back to the early 1800s when pioneers came to the area and started farming. In 1916, coffee was first introduced to Canon City by local businessmen Harry Himmelberger and John L. Lowry. The coffee beans were brought over on horseback from Mexico. Today, Canon City is home to more than 30 independent cafes that serve up unique blends of coffee from all over the world. One of the earliest cafes in Canon City was Dutch Bros., which opened its doors in 1892. It was here that locals would come together to chat about their day-to-day lives and share news of what was happening in nearby towns and cities. The cafe served as a meeting ground for different factions during the late 1800s and early 1900s – it was through Dutch Bros. that people learned how to talk about coffee with other people without getting too political or too My Fair Ladyesque (or Rowan & Martin’s). In 1924, Harry Himmelberger opened his own café, Jugendcafé Deutschland, which quickly became one of the most popular places in town for caffeine lovers of all ages to stop into for a quick cup of joe (or three). It wasn’t until 1977 that Harry Himmelberger passed away that his café closed its doors forever – but not before leaving behind many memories for those who stopped by over the years including various specialties like chocolates and donuts made just for him by his employees (and sometimes still available today!). Today’s Jugendcafé Deutschland proudly serves up delicious German-style cappuccinos with thick cream cheese frosting while also offering international favorites like Jamaican Latte Royale and Colombian Coffee Cake!
