Canon City is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community has been named after Canon George Washington and his grandson General John Adams who were both born in nearby Aurora. The first settler in Canon City was George Washington who moved to the area in 1867 from Centennial City, Colorado. He built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street and named it Canon City after his father-in-law Phineas Gage. In 1869, he married Martha Hunt and they began plowing land that would become much of the town today. They also raised chickens and hogs until 1886 when they started raising cattle which became a big industry in this area. By 1890, there were over 10 businesses in Canon City with a total payroll of $2 million! The commercial growth continued into the 20th century as various industries such as printing & publishing (the first store being opened by A C Fenton in 1907), agriculture (eager to capitalize on growing crops brought over by settlers from Kansas), pet supplies (Petsmart opening up shop here in 1955), tool companies (Hercules Tool Company being founded here in 1916) and finally transportation types such as trucking (Denver's first trolley line running through canon city) helped add jobs to the local economy during this time period. In 1971, following >Douglas County's merger with Colorado, canon city merged into the newly formed which had a population of 661,211 at its peak in 2000.
