Canon City was founded in 1875 by cattlemen and farmers who named their new settlement after the canon built by Nicholas-Jacques Conte at an site just east of modern Canon City on the San Juan River. In 1888, Canon City became part of the Denver–Aurora metropolitan area when Aurora was incorporated as a city. The city's industries have included printing and Publishing, chemicals and plastics, transportation equipment manufacturing and software development. The first store opened in Canon City in 1875 by cattlemen and farmers who named their new settlement after the canon built by Nicholas-Jacques Conte at an site just east of modern Canon City on the San Juan River. A post office was established in Canon City in 1888. The first two hotel buildings were constructed in 1898 - one near Main Street and One near Euclid Avenue - both of which are still standing today as part of thecanoncityheritageandtourismcenter complex . The largest employer within town limits has been Printing & Publishing since 1971 when Kodak merged with Eastman Kodak Company to form Kodak Newspapers Incorporated . However, today alot of heavy industry is located outside town limits due to its easy access to Interstate 25 which provides jobs for many manufacturers throughout central Colorado
Canon City, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. It is located on the Red River near the Wyoming border. The population was 2,512 at the 2000 census. The name Canon City is from tollgate meaning "bridge over" and CITYmeaning "town." Canon City was founded in 1867 when a group of farmers decided to move from their original home east of Denver to what is now Canon City due to its railroads and lack of trees. In 1862, John Wesley Powell passed through Canon City on his way to see the peaks of Aspen Mountain. He named it after his patron saint, Thomas Aquinas, as he found no church there that could serve as an altar for him while traveling through this remote area. In 1865-1867, Canon City saw heavy fighting between American Civil War troops and Mexican forces during General Zachary Taylor's campaign against Mexico; this contributed greatly to its growth as a town during these years. The post office at Canon City was first established in 1877. When it opened, it served only residents of the town itself (which included present-day Cherry Creek Village). In 1903, mail finally reached Cherry Creek Village after being routed around Grand Junction via ranches on both sides of the river corridor. canoncitypostoffice@gmail.com became operational that year!
