When Canon City, Colorado was founded in 1868 as a wagon town on the edge of the Rocky Mountains, it was a small and peaceful community. However, over time the town changed hands many times and grew to be one of the most important transportation hubs in Colorado. The first military deployment to Canon City was by American Revolutionary War veteran James Logan. Logan served as an officer in the Continental Army and participated in several battles including Saratoga Springs and Yorktown. After his service, Logan settled in Canon City and started a grocery store. In 1875, he married Eliza Prentice and together they began to build up what would become one of Colorado's largest businesses. During World War II, Canon City saw some of its most significant moments. On February 14th 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered General George Smedley Butler to lead United States Marines into combat against Japanese forces at Midway Island. The battle lasted three days and ended with Japan's loss; however, it is estimated that over 100 Americans were killed or wounded during the engagement. After the war, there were multiple waves of migration to Canon City from all around Colorado. Some of these new residents brought their families with them while others decided to stay behind after experiencing some of life's challenges during wartime such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
