Canon City is a small town located in Southern Colorado. The population was 7,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Canon City-Centennial School District. The main industries in Canon City are agriculture, forestry, and manufacturing. The name "Canon City" comes from Salt Lake Valley's namesake: George Herbert Walker Bush (1846-1925). In 1892, Bush sold his interest in the Utah Mining and Manufacturing Company to J.P. Morgan for $5,000 cash and nine shares of stock worth $100 each. This event marked the beginning of Canon City's growth as a commercial center for southern Colorado. The first settler in Canon City was John Aiken who arrived around 1870 according to records from that time period. He built a cabin on what is now US 231 south of town while he awaited news of an railroad connection to the rest of the world. By 1888, Aiken had moved out and his son Wesley had taken up residence near US 87 east of town along with other pioneers including James White and Hiram Howells. By 1893, White had also left for good and all but one veteran from World War I lived in Canon City until it closed its doors permanently due to budget cuts in 1949; however many locals still remember their names like Whitesides Bill or Harry Howells who were killed during a fight at the local bar six years later when old enough to drink legally! One thing that has been consistent throughout this community's history is its strong support for education; starting withBushnell High School which opened its doors on February 1st, 1892 under guidance of then Superintendent Dolphus Hinkleman after initial bids by ten other schools failed to come close due to lack of money!
