Canon City has been home to seminal moments in American history including the first successful powered flight by an American aviator, Emmett J. Fritsch; John F Kennedy's inauguration as president; and Neil Armstrong's landing on the moon. The city also played host to both world editions of the World Cup, which most recently took place in 1998 and 2006 respectively. Today, Canon City continues to be a vibrant cultural and economic center for southwestern Colorado with many popular restaurants and attractions such as Six Flags Over Texas and Keystone Lake Recreation Area available for visitors to enjoy while they are here.

Canon City was founded by George Stephenson in 1868 as a wagon stop on the Lincoln Highway between Denver and Cheyenne. The town name comes from Constable Canon's Creek that flowed through the area before it was diverted to form Fillmore Creek by dippers when they discovered gold near Canon City in 1875. The first post office opened in 1876, and the first settler was C A Ruffin who arrived with his family in December of that year. By 1880, there were 36 people living in Canon City according to U S Census Bureau records In 1907, a new water tower was built to serve the growing community andusher growth caused by oil discoveries east of Chatfield on US 15 near present day Pueblo A hardware store and telephone company were established soon thereafter By 1918, just two years after it had been organized as an incorporated village, Canon City had reached its peak with 247 residents During World War II, many employed locals helped turn around munitions factories located nearby(See also: Battle of Canon City) after production ceased due to lack of demand
In 1868, Canon City was founded by George A. Smith. The town grew rapidly and in 1892 it became a city with its own government. In 1907, the first high school in Canon City opened and in 1930 the first post office.
