Since the early days of the United States Navy, there have been a variety of different types and sizes of gift baskets sent to sailors in San Diego. The first navy gift history in Canon City was on December 10th, 1903 when Commodore John J. Stevens gifted a basket of refreshments to Rear Admiral Alfred W. Hoskins Jr., Commander United States Pacific Fleet at his home following his visit to San Diego that day. Commodore Stevens had recently become Commandant of the Naval Academy after serving as Superintendent from 1902-1904 and he knew Admiral Hoskins very well from his time as commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron Eight (Destroyer Division Three) during World War I. Rear Admiral Hoskins was then Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel Affairs within the Department of Navy Europe before becoming Commanding Officer (CNO) United States Pacific Fleet on September 1st, 1921 when America entered into World War II. This event is significant because it marked the first time that any member of the US Naval Service had visited San Diego since its founding in 1851! In 1975, Vice Admiral Harry Swayne donated a large basket filled with selected items related to sailing and seamanship to be given away at a shipyard party aboard USS Constitution Museum shipyards celebration honoring fifty years since she was built at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company Ltd.. During this same celebrationVice Admiral Swayne also became oneof only two Americans ever honored with membership in both Royal Yacht Club London and American Seamanship Society! These prestigious organizations recognize Vice Admirals who have made significant contributions to American maritime culture both ashore and afloat through their service as Commandant/Chief Counselor/Secretary or other similar rank within their respective fleets or branches! As part of this eventthe Commodore's Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented jointly by these two organizations! In November 2003, Lieutenant Commander Denise Aiken donated a beautiful engraved silver bowl - depicting scenes from her favorite book series - To The Memory Of My Fathers Sailors who served aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 64) during her combat deployments while deployed as part of Task Force 74th AWardwinning Expeditionary Squadron located off Somalia Her Egret Blue enameled dish measures 3 inches wide x 2 1/4 inches deep x 1 inch high She is signed by all thirteen authors depicted on its back panel including Rudy Rucker , Doug Heyes & Lawrence Wattrell . Lieutenant Commander Aiken is currentlyCommanding Officer (CO) Carrier Strike Group Nine operating outport Norfolk Va.. In 1907, Canon City became a full city under the jurisdiction of Loveland which at that time also included Castle Rock (later Greeley). At that time there were only around 10 people living in Canon City while Greeley had over 100,000 people!
