The Colorado Air National Guard's 3rd Fighter Wing is the only U.S. military unit permanently deployed in Centennial, Colo., and one of the few military installations in the United States to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its organization. On July 14, 1917, when Colorado became a state, it organized as an air force under 1st Lt. John Custer's command and raised three squadrons of Curtiss Jennies, which were assigned to Second Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer's 2nd Cavalry Regiment during World War I. In 1923, after Colorado adopted a Constitution that established a unicameral legislature and granted voting rights to women, units of the National Guard were transferred from other states toColorado Springs and Denver for deployment during World War II as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "All-America First" policyprogram to provide American troops with combat experience in Europe before they went into battle on Long Island or Normandy. In 1949, while 3rd Fighter Wing was being activated at Olathe Air Force Base (Kan.), Col USAF Gen James Ewart decided that Centennial would be an ideal location for an air force installation because of its strategic location between Denver and Little Rock and its easy access by Interstate 25 for refueling missions over southern Rockies. With this objective in mind, General Ewart designated Olathe AFB as home station for the wing until 1997 when it moved permanently to Centennial AFB following relocations at South Dakota Range AF (Dakotas) in 1972-1973; Great Falls Army Depot (Montanas) in 1975-1976; Seymour Johnson AFB (Nassau County) in 1978-1979; Robins AFB (GA) 1980-1981; Waco Army Base (TX) 1982-1983; Ellsworth AB (SD) 1984-1985; Kirtland AFB(NE) 1986-1987; Altus AFB(OK) 1988-1989; Tinker Air Force Base(OK)" on December 5, 1990 upon completion of construction at Centennial AAF which included new Hangar #1/2 complete with taxiways/runways/apron/maintenance hangar area/, new Command Post Building complete with Education Annex/Operations Center/, New Barracks building completed 1998 includingattailet facilities/, Strathmore Army Medical Center opened 2000 completingCentennial's health care facilitiesouceline." On the morning of September 18, 1912, an unarmed airplane belonging to Colorado Springs-based The Denver Post made a successful flight from Fort Huachuca in Arizona to Centennial, Colorado. Upon landing at Pikes Peak Airport, the airplane was met by members of the United States Army Aviation Corps who gave it a tour. The gift was later presented to then-Army Chief of Staff General James Longstreet by Post editor and publisher Edward C. Smith.
Centennial is a city in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Centennial was founded on July 24, 1876 by George W. Beekman and James H. Garfield as a small town named Centennial Springs after the centenary of Italy's unification and the location of several springs that year. The first post office in Centennial opened in 1875. The current Post Office building was built in 1907 and dedicated on May 6, 1907 by Mayor Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who served as first Postmaster General of America at that time. In 1916, Centennial became one of the townships within Arapahoe County when it was created from parts of Greeley and Westminstertowns along with Aspen to form what would become Arapahoe County. The township had no voting rights until it ceded them to Park City on February 26, 1925; however, it still retains its name today even though Park City has a much more populous population than Centennial does today (the split transferred about 60% of the Centennial ZIP code area’s population to Aurora). CentENNIAL SPRINGS: On July 24th 1876 George W Beekman and James H Garfield settled near present day Centennial Springs after finding many springs while exploring Routt county for grazing lands east of Aspen Creek where they were living then! This small settlement grew rapidly due to 3 main factors: 1) wagon trade brought people & goods into this area which increased demand for water; 2) numerous families came here during gold Rush era; 3) When Ft Washakie closed in late 1870's most people turned westward towards Gunnison & Pueblo because there were no other places left to farm or ranch! so these pioneers set up homes near present day creek bed! By mid 1880’s many businesses including grocery store & hotel had been erected here! In 1886 post office moved here from old mill site just outside town limits! This early stage Main Street business district saw lots of growth due to new transportation options available such as electric vehicles which made traveling around town easier! Streets now spelled “Beekman” & “Garfield” but original settlers considered these streets “Springs Avenue” – proof that this community continued growing even AFTER postal service relocated!!! Today we enjoy some beautiful downtown buildings dating back over 100 years including Beeks Bank building (1892), First National Bank Building (1907), Masonic Temple (1915), Pioneer Hall (1986), etc….. These buildings are testimony not only to our history but also our thriving community culture which continues today!
The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gift baskets to commemorate special occasions. The Air Force deployed a gift history in celebration of National Gift Day. The history began on Oct. 3, 1948 with the gift of an RAF Spitfire to the USAF at Lackland AFB, Texas. On National Gift Day, Nov. 6, 2018, the USAF gifted another RAF Spitfire to Monterey Peninsula Regional Airport in California for use as a transient hangar and training flying facility.
Centennial, Colorado was founded on July 24, 1876, by prospectors John D. Rockefeller and James G. Watt. The town was named for the year of its creation, 1876. Centennial grew rapidly during its first few years, with a population of around 500 people. In 1879, Centennial became the county seat of Douglas County. The following year saw a large influx of new settlers as gold was discovered in nearby Arapahoe County. In 1886, Centennialbecame the headquare for Geary County and in 1889 it joined Douglas County to form today’s Denver-Aurora area. The centennial celebration began on July 24th and ran until October 10th; all manner of events were held throughout the city including an agricultural fairgrounds where agriculture products from all over were exhibited; two Days of Industry; a rodeo event at Park Meadows; a centenary parade through downtown Denver; and finally an “official” count which included public speeches by various dignitaries such as President Grover Cleveland and Vice President Andrew Johnson (Ulysses S. Grant). The entire process involved more than 1 million people from across Colorado who participated in some way or another urinarycelebrity—a very early formof social networking—signed up to attend meetings or contributed money to causes such as the American Red Cross or Rotary Club both in town and outstretched into neighboring counties when they heard about what was taking place down south (the Ute Indians had been living near Denver since 1868). It is interesting to think back on how this small community functioned almost 100 years ago now given that so many things have changed within our borders since then: transportation has improved markedly while communication technology has become much more sophisticated; job opportunities have arisen while poverty has decreased substantially (some would say even erased); housing prices have skyrocketed while crime rates remain relatively stable or even decreasing among certain sections thereof; education opportunities abound both locally and nationally while still providing quality courses despite budget cutszepts imposed by government officials trying to save money rather than invest ineducating their citizens better thereby promoting economic development…. centenarians are an invaluable resource for researchers working on local history because they often provide insights not found elsewhere….
On July 4, 1876, Colorado became the 67th state in the United States. The day's events began with a celebration at the old Denver Arsenal, where President Ulysses S. Grant delivered the keynote address. In attendance were local dignitaries and representatives from across the Midwest. The next day saw a grand parade through Downtown Denver led by Mayor John Fetterman and military brass. At 11am, three cannons fired to mark the opening of what would become known as "The War of 1876." During that year's campaign for president, Andrew Johnson was endorsed by Colorado Gov Manuela Gallegos and received 23% of the vote in Colorado Springs but only won 3 out of 29 states due to his unpopularity in eastern Colorado (including Weld County).
