Centennial is a town in Logan County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,574 at the 2010 census. Centennial began as a small ranching community on the banks of the Little San Miguel River. In 1876, it became the terminus of a wagon road connecting Denver and Salt Lake City. By 1900, Centennial had become one of the most important mining towns in western Colorado because of its deposits of silver and gold. Centennial's fortunes changed again when oil discovered near Trinidad in 1915 led to an oil boom that created jobs and increased sales taxes. The population decreased during World War II as demand for munitions dwindled, but recovery began after the war with new housing developments and businesses opening up around Centennial. The town was named for General James Kiely (1821-1896), who fought in Mexico and served as Commander-in-Chief of all Union troops during the Mexican–American War. Kiely's home at 7609 E Street is now called Pioneer Monument Park. A two-mile stretch of Ute Road leading from Centennial to Grants Pass was once considered one of America's " dirtiest highways." Today it is one of Colorado's most popular tourist destinations for outdoor activities including hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding, fishing and swimming; it also has several restaurants and pubs providing options for food poisoning prevention while exploring centenarians' heritage sites like Pioneer Monument Park or Grant's Pass Museum District
