However, Mayor Don Iveson remains committed to Centennial's future and says that he knows there are people who want it here - so long as they can maintain access to necessary services like transportation and cultural programming.

The town was named for the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence. The first post office in Centennial was established on November 1, 1881. In 1886, Centennial became part of the newly formed Pueblo County. On January 1, 1912, Centennial became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 350 people. In 1916-1917, Centennial was one of five towns in Colorado to be struck by a devastating tornado that killed over 25 people and injured more than 100. The tornado caused extensive damage to homes and businesses throughout the community.
Centennial is the centenary of Colorado's admission to the United States in 1876. The event was celebrated statewide on October 14, 1976.
