The town was named for the centennial of Fort Laramie (1876), which gave birth to the Rocky Mountains. The first Europeans to visit Centennial were French traders on their way from Montrose to trade with the Arikara Nation in 1805. They traveled overland and established trading posts along what is now I-25 and US 25 north from Denver until 1810 when they founded Fort Laramie on the headwaters of Clear Creek. Over time, other Hudsons Bay Company traders also visited Centennial and post opened up nearby Businessman's Ridge,present day Park Meadows and parts of present day Aspen. In 1876, General George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry through Moffat County attacking Native American villages near present day Aspen Canyon while rounding up Cheyenne and Arapaho chiefs as part of a campaign against Sioux resistance to white encroachment onto their land. The Battle of Little Big Horn took place three miles east of Centennial today in what is now Central Park before Custer's unit retreated back into Indian Territory after capturing two lodges containing $1 million worth of supplies including horses and moccasins belonging to Chief Black Hills Apache leader Geronimo

Centennial was founded on July 6, 1876, when a group of creditors of John Wesley Powell met to make plans to form a town near the current site of Telluride. The first post office opened in Centennial on November 16, 1877. The name "Centennial" was chosen because it commemorated the centenary of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution's signing date (July 6). The only two businesses in Centennial were an druggist and a grocery store; both closed by 1907. Today there are few if any remnants of early Centennial life other than its Museum District which contains many historical buildings from various eras including pioneer homes and outbuildings as well as a replica Steamboat Sue which served as the centerpiece for local fairs until it was destroyed by fire in 1979. On July 6, 1876, miners who had been working in Gunnison traveling downriver discovered coal seams that would later be developed into what is now Weld County. On October 3-4th they met at Telluride and elected John Wesley Powell as their captain general with Charles Evans Hughes serving as second-in-command; this event marks the beginning of what would become known as "The Gold Rush." They set out for gold prospecting country but quickly ran into difficulties due to heavy snowdrifts and range conditions; their first discovery yielded just 8 ounces (227 milliliters) of gold! However after several more successes they were able to bring up over $10 thousand worth of ore before finally giving up in 1879 due to financial complications caused by new discoveries elsewhere along the river valley floor where larger amounts of gold could be found without having to turn around and go back home again! However despite these setbacks profits continued to flow even while production levels decreased until 1901 when quartz deposits began turning up everywhere making mining less profitable than ever before: all this changed with World War I when Britain became involved in World War I which led to an influx of American soldiers into Europe leaving behind lots of valuable minerals which led directly to renewed goldmining activity throughout much of North America! In 1915 Centennial merged with neighboring Pueblo becoming one municipality under one rule! This consolidation came about due largely to disagreements over zoning laws between Pueblo and Centennial (Pueblo wanted autonomy while Centennial desired annexation). The result made for some difficult times but ultimately resulted in increased law enforcement activities within both municipalities combined with better municipal services overall - something that can still be seen today through things like improved public infrastructure such as roads (!), parks (including nearly complete golf courses!), water systems etc., even though annexations have taken place among other nearby municipalities over time
