In 1875, Centennial, Colorado was founded as the town of Arvada. The first post office in Centennial was established on December 12th, 1875. On July 4th, 1886, Centennial became a city and on November 3rd of that year the first municipal election took place. At that time there were only six residents in Centennial and three vote cast. Two years later on January 6th 1888 Centennial had its first fire station and two months later it had its first water system. A dispensary was also established in Centennial at this time. On May 15th 1889 centenary welcomed its third post office when Arvada opened with fifty-four inhabitants under Mr. Harkins operation. In 1890 an electric street light system arrived and in 1893 a public library (later renamed the Denver Public Library) was built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie with funds contributed by the citizens ofCentennial. One of the most significant events during this period for Centennial was the dedication of Arvada’s civic center which served as both a meeting hall and social hall until 1951 when it became home to the Centennial Museum which currently occupies that building The municipally initiated program known as “Centennialfest” began in 1978 as an event to celebrate local culture along with various festivities throughout the year including art shows, music concerts and agricultural fairs The program has since grown into an annual celebration attracting thousands of people from all over Colorado Springs

This signaled an early start to what would be an outgoing decade for Colorado politics with significant changes ahead such as women making it into elected office for the first time and increased access to education and healthcare opportunities for all Coloradans despite formidable Republican opposition back home in Kansas City and Omaha respectively
