The Centennial Museum of Colorado in Centennial, CO has a rich military history dating back to 1861. The museum’s collection includes artifacts from the Colorado Volunteers Infantry Regiment and the 1st Mountain Division during World War I. In addition, the museum has displays on the history of military deployed gifts, including those from Colorado Springs-based Fort Carson National Military Park. The first military deployed gift in Centennial was a flagpole from Fort Lyon, AZ. On July 4, 1861, General John Custer led his troops into battle against Native Americans at Battle of Little Big Horn near Ariz., becoming known as “the last great Indian war”. After victory at Little Big Horn, General Custer ordered his regiment to fly a US flag at Fort Lyon. As part of this act of patriotism, the flagpole was brought by wagon to the fort and placed atop the hilltop. In 1916, The Denver Post featured an article about soldier friends who had sent food and clothing to Spain during World War I. Included were photos and text documenting soldiers who donated their equipment or supplies for use in Spanish Civil War efforts such as artillery and ambulance work. In 1876, Colorado became the 44th state to enter the Union. The Centennial year was a time of celebration for both the state and its military. In commemoration of this event, Colorado's Military History Museum began collecting items related to the Colorado militia during that time. This included weapons, clothing, tools, and other equipment used by troops in service to their respective states or country.

Centennial is a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. Centennial is part of the Westminster–Aurora–Brighton Micropolitan Statistical Area. Centennial is located on the south bank of the Animas River and it is bordered by Routt County to the east and north, Montrose County to the west, and Adams County to the south. The river forms part of both Centennial's eastern border and its western edge. The first permanent settler in Centennial was John Dutton in 1876. He built a log cabin on top of an existing outhouse near what would become Centennial's central square today. The original name for Centennial was "Eagle Butte". A post office called Eagle Butte was established in 1877, but failed to take hold because there were no residents living there at that time. In 1879, Pershing Wagon Wheel became proprietor of what would eventually be known as White Sands Millinery Store & Emporium which sat on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets today. In 1880, George Fenton opened his mill here which continued until 1984 when it closed due to environmental damage caused by mining operations nearby. The first school in Centenary was organized December 3rd, 1881 when a group of nine students from Lone Tree School District learned how to read and write from Mrs Hargrave-Willis who also taught them arithmetic and math skills while her husband attended a nearby coal mine twelve miles away on Mineral Hill Road (now called 2nd Street). On January 9th 1886 James Cook opened his own grocery store on First Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets which soon became popular with locals for its variety of groceries including hardware, feed supplies etc.. For many years this store operated as one stop shop for all local shopping needs – something that still happens today! In 1902 Gertrude Bird published her book "The Life History Of America" here selections about life at Eagle Butte include: “I am writing now within easy reach of my old home—a few blocks away—in lodgings I have had since 1865” In 1916 Pema Chodron wrote her article "A New Method Of Meditation" about meditation practices she had been practicing at Eagle Butte where she found comfort through recitation of scriptures during her morning hours before work started.. Clyde Smedley opened his first restaurant called 'Smedley's' here in 1924 followed by Louie's Restaurant two years later making this one early pioneers restaurant Chain Reaction Restaurants . Upon Clyde Smedley's death ownership passed thru his son Don Smedley into 2nd generation chain - Don & Charlene Smedleys - until 2006 when they sold their business back to Charlie Bircher who operates it currently as Keystone Café ..... Centennial was a time of great change in Colorado. The region had been under Spanish rule for centuries, and even after independence was won, Mexicans continued to control much of the state. Centennial was also an important year in United States history because it marked the end of slavery in the country. The first Europeans to visit what is now Colorado were traders from Asia sailing ships up the Rocky Mountains in 1776. They saw rich mineral deposits and named their discovery “Colorado” after the Italian city of Colonna on his trip. In 1813, Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States and decided to make Colorado part of America. He called out General James Haggard to lead an expedition into this new land and bring back El Dorado gold mines as proof that he had been right about its potential value as a place for settlers. In 1841, when there were only 10 miles (16 kilometers) of dirt road between Fort Collins and Golden, Colo., Edmund Cripps built Naos Ranch as a dry goods store and tavern on what is now First Street in Golden. By 1850, Naos Ranch had become one of the largest dry goods stores in Kansas City, Mo., when it moved from its original location near Pikes Peak to this spot north of Golden at 11th Street and Broadway Avenue. In 1865, Centennial Day was celebrated throughout Colorado with parades through town squares followed by fireworks displays over downtown Denverites’ heads while they entertained guests at home with music and games played outdoors during winter months. Denver residents voted on November 3rd, 1876—the day following American independence—to incorporate as a city with boundaries that would include all present-day Denver County except for those portions lying within Broomfield County eastward along Interstate 70. On November 6th ceremonies opened both district courts located inside City Hall where citizens gathered for business meetings which authorized annexation by Denver pending final approval by county commissioners. The first election results show that 59 percent of Denver voters approved incorporation; 8 percent voted no (). At first there was some tension between development advocates who wanted rapid growth while preservationists argued against large developments without community input or consideration for other aspects such as public transportation or environmental justice.
