centennial, Colorado was founded on October 10th, 1876 by General George Armstrong Custer and his men. Centennial is a city in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 at the time of its incorporation. Centennial has since become one of the most important cities in the Rocky Mountains region. The original settlers were farmers and their families who had come to the area from Illinois in 1854. They erected a log cabin on what is now called the Plaza de Armas square in town and began growing crops. In 1870 they bought 8 acres of land around what is now Crested Butte for $1 per acre. The first house built on this property was called “Moses” after Moses Wheeler who donated it to the town as a gift. In 1871 Centennial voted to become an incorporated village with a post office, schoolhouse, and meeting hall located at what is now First Avenue and Prospect Street. On November 3rd, 1875 Centennial became one of thirty-one townships within Larimer County when it was created from part of Pikes Peak National Park. Centennial quickly grew into a major cultural center due to its close relationship with Pikes Peak National Park and its many natural attractions including Mount Rushmore National Monument and Canyonlands National Park which are also within easy reach from Centennial through access roads (Highway 287). Many residents commute outside of town for work or pleasure because there are no other major transportation options available outside of Larimer County or Denver City Limits

The first census in Colorado took place in 1880 and recorded a population of 907 people. In 1902,zonation boundaries were changed by Congress as part of the United States acquisition of Arizona; as a result, Boulder County became part of Arizona while Weld County remained within Colorado. In 1912–13, violence erupted between two groups known as "the Outlaws" and "the Gentlemen". A group led by George Armstrong Custer attacked several men associated with a political opponent named John Chivington during a poll tax protest at Thornton Ranch near Fort Collins on January 12th 1913. More than fifty-six people were killed and over one hundred injured in what is now considered one of the deadliest clashes between law enforcement officers and demonstrators in U.S.-based history. This event remains significant for its brutality and its role in shaping America's perception about federalism.
