In 1911, the first airforce base in Commerce City was established. The Colorado Air National Guard's 1st Fighter Squadron flew reconnaissance and bomber missions over Denver during World War I. After the war, the squadron became part of the Aircraft Control and Warning Service (ACWS) and flew defense patrols overflying North America. In 1951, ACWS relocated to Point Defiance Naval Base due to increasing military deployments throughout the Western US. The 1st Fighter Wing assumed responsibility for providing fighter protection for NAS Point Defiance while also conducting flying training missions for new aviation graduates from other parts of the country. The wing disbanded in 1992 but its legacy continues today as a unit of the Colorado Air National Guard's 142nd Attack Wing which provides aerial refueling and combat support services to global operations including Operation Neptune Spear and Operation Protective Edge.

The city's economy is diverse with several industries such as manufacturing (including businesses in digital media), retail sales, tourism, services and professional services accounting for most of its employment sectors; however, service jobs are also growing rapidly due to increased travel within Colorado and out-of-state visitors visiting Industry Valley county seat Centennial for Chinook salmon fishing or Green River for rafting trips
