Commerce City is a small city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Weld County. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Commerce City was founded in 1887 by Frederick Bancroft and James Hutton as a dry goods store and post office on the banks of the Green River. The town grew rapidly due to its location, and by 1912 it had 12 stores and 100 residents. By 1920, Commerce City had 24 stores and 250 residents. In 1928, Merchants Trust Company opened up its own bank which became one of the largest in Colorado Springs until it merged with Denver's First National Bank in 1978. In 1945, during World War II, Businessman Wernher von Braun used Commerce City for his rocket engine testing site at White Sands Missile Range. Von Braun's company later moved to nearby La Jolla before finally settling in Mesa Verde after he retired from space exploration in 1997. Commerce City experienced a rapid growth following 9/11 when many people came to visit or work in Fort Collins while they were still recovering from that event. Commerce City is a small city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is the home of CSU-Pueblo and several other colleges and universities. Commerce City takes its name from the town ofCommerce in England which was settled by Englishmen in the early 1800s. The first permanent settler in what would become Commerce City was James Garton who arrived on July 4, 1864. He named his new land "Garton's Ranch" after himself and his brother-in-law, George Barton. The first store opened on Main Street in 1865. In 1868, Johnnie Dye opened a wagon shop near where Interstate 25 currently meets Broadway Avenue. The area that now includes Commerce City was first surveyed for a post office in 1879 by Jens Jensen as part of a larger farming operation called "Jensen's Prairie". A post office called "Commerce" was established on November 14, 1880, and remained open until it closed on December 15, 1906. In 1907 when Denver & Rio Grande Western began constructing the line from Pueblo to Durango via CommerceCity it became an important stop for travelers along the route. This led to increased development around the original Post Office Square including such businesses as hotels, restaurants and retail stores that continue to exist today such as Rucker’s Department Store (closed 1974). The square also served as an overflow parking lot for local businesses during holiday season when downtown business suffered because of limited parking spaces available elsewhere in town
