Commerce City has been known as an important center for the woolen and fabric trade since its founding in 1868 by two Englishmen, George Washington Beekman and Nathaniel Bowles. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Arkansas River, which made it an allure for farmers searching for a reliable source of water and goods to sell. By 1880, Commerce City had become one of the largest towns in southern Colorado with a population of 4,000. The original town site was along present-day Southern Avenue just east of what is now State Route 724 (northwest corner of present-day Central Avenue). In 1868, George Washington Beekman and Nathaniel Bowles founded what would become Commerce City after scout John Crouch discovered an irrigation system linking the Arkansas River with New Mexico that could be used to grow crops year-round. The partners bought 2,500 acres (1 km2) near present-day downtown Commerce City from J P Henson & Sons ranchers on January 12, 1868. Within weeks, they had laid out streets and erected homes – including one called "the White House" - while still awaiting government sanction to build more than a small community. The first post office in Commerce City was established on February 15, 1868; it served as the home station for mail from Fort Lyon until 1870 when it moved to Fort Laramie under Army command. By 1886, there were 9 general stores in town serving 3 million customers each month; over 30 businesses conducted manufacturing or agricultural operations within walking distance of each other. A major transportation artery running through downtown commerce was Stagecoach Road which connected Ft Lyon with Denver via Leadville Pass before crossing into Wyoming Territory near Medicine Lodge where passengers disembarked at Kiowa Crossing for travel into Denver or Cheyenne Mountain where goods were loaded onto stagecoach trains heading south back down Leadville Pass before terminating at Carbondale Junction northwest of Magic Lake outside Of Congressional Gold Mine

The name "Commerce City" came from 1875 when the first post office in Commerce City was established by A.J. McNaught and Wm. Halsey Macy on a small parcel of land east of downtown, opposite what is now Colorado Springs.[4] The city was founded as several small settlements around 1875-76,[5][6] some near Cache Valley (now Trinidad), others west of what is now Commerce City on Animas River bed,[7] including the present day Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian reservations east of town and Spring Creek Ranch south of town to which ranch hands also contributed goods and services during agricultural times before they were surrendered in 1865 to US Army General John Custer's soldiers under orders from then President Abraham Lincoln with military justification for ending Native American resistance against white settlement across much of North America[8][9][10][11] until 1862 when all such resistance ended following passage of the Indian Appropriations Act December 3, 1868 which created Bureaucratic Order No. 9 through Executive Order No. 4620 effective November 14th,1868 legalizing all forms of native Resistance against white Settlement throughout most or all sections westward thereof as authorized by section 2(a) of act Decided September 15th last year entitled "An Act descriptive of certain Resolutions passed at numerousassemblies held throughout this state concerning Lands lying within said limits aforesaid" In early 1870s it became apparent that Cache Valley would be site for future commercial center due to its strategic location between Telluride and Gunnison mountains; nearby cotton fields began to be developed beginning in 1870-71 followed by meatpacking operations in later years In 1865 Union Pacific Railroad completed its line from Denver via Fort Collins to Greeley passing through Commerce City along way; after crossing Gunnison Pass (and being rerouted onto railroad tracks northward) it proceeded northeast via Keystone Lake then rejoined Denver-Greeley route near Aspen past East Aurora until final destination Wells Fargo Depot late July/early August 1865
