Commerce City, Colorado is a small town in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Commerce City was established in 1876. The name of the town was changed from Cadet to Commerce City on October 14, 1907. On May 7, 1912, Commerce City became a city and had its own mayor and council. In 1960 it became a suburb of Aurora and has since been incorporated as an independent city again with its own government. Commerce City is known for two things: its cheese industry and its annual "Colorado State Fair". The cheese industry is one of the most important aspects of the town's economy and has made it an affluent community with many well-known names such as Kraft Foods and American Cheese Company (now Belknap Farms). The fairgrounds are also home to several businesses including PepsiCo's Doubleday Theater Complex which opened in 2006 as America's First Multi-screen Stadium
