commerce City is a town in Moffat County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,922 at the 2010 census. The name comes from a post office located in the town square. The first settlers to Commerce City were prospectors who found success in the goldmining area of southern Moffat County. In 1859, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill on the San Miguel River and began shipping goods back and forth between Cache Valley and Stockton. With this business model, Sutter became one of the early pioneers of what would become known as Denver-Aurora-Commerce (DAC) region. In 1861, Sutter partnered with James Wolkentin to open The Denver Post Office in downtown Commerce City; this marked the beginning of mail service for residents of that area. In 1865, The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad reached Commerce City from Golden and connected it with Durango and Frio Counties south of Fort Collins. This soon made it one of the most important cities in Southern Colorado because it became easy for people to get to various parts of the state by rail. By 1870, commerce had grown so much that civic boosters decided to move downtown from their original location on State Street near Second Avenue southeast into what is now called "the heart" of Commerce City – First National Bank Building on Main Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues east – making it possible for businesses to expand beyond their own fronts into adjacent blocks or whole buildings! During its heyday as an economic powerhouse during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Commerce City attracted millions of dollars in investment capital which helped spur a series of industrial advances including electric power generation plants built by Northern Electric Company (NEC), heavy manufacturing complexes erected by Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC) at Third Avenue North and Jefferson Boulevard Northeast – all while creating thousands new jobs! Many famous locals associated with these eras include founder/president James Wolkentin who died suddenly just before his 100th birthday; fellow entrepreneur John Dickey who served two terms as mayor before becoming governor after Franklin D Roosevelt’s election victory; bankers Averell Harriman and Nelson Rockefeller; physician Driscoll Cravath; artist Edward Hopper; rancher Harry Bailey Kapp; miners Cecil Beall III (1904–1991), Donny Steele (1910–1996), Alvin Hansen (1920–2004) – among many others! The first people to live here were the Haudenosaunee who called it "Kwitoka" meaning place of green corn. They built their homes on high ground near what is now Union Station. In 1868, John D'Arcy Maynard founded Maynard & Co., one of the largest mercantile companies in America and one of the most successful in its time. This company became known for its fine flourishes such asmayonnaise, pickles and other vegetables—a trademark that still exists today. In 1912, Commerce City passed through an act by Congress which designated it as a town site within Arapahoe County so that business could be conducted more effectively there without having to move every two or three years to another county seat like Greeley or Aurora. And so Commerce City grew steadily until World War II when things started to change because war affected everybody differently: commerce dropped off while production increased due to wartime needs; jobs dried up during peacetime; post-war growth began but has been mostly slow due to competition from newer cities; and then came recession (1987-1991) followed by strong job growth in subsequent years before slowing again in recent years As recently as 2006 Commerce City had about half a million residents with only 2 percent of all businesses located there In terms of economic output per capita, however, Commerce City ranks third behind onlyDenver and Aurora At present commerce activities are centered around gas sales stations and a couple small retailers
