Commerce City is a city in Arapaho and Douglas counties, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver−Aurora−Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Commerce City was founded in 1869 by James Wickersham and his railroad partners as a site for a new town to be built on the right-of-way of the South Platte Railroad. The first post office was established in 1870, and the first store opened in 1874. In 1875, the town had only seven residents; by 1890 it had grown to over 200. By 1900, Commerce City had a full-time school system with thirty students and twelve teachers. The city's growth continued through World War I and into World War II; during that time it grew from 10 to 30 businesses and supported an estimated 100 workers. Afterward, Commerce City'srowth slowed until its peak during the 1980s when it reached its current size of 9,887 people. Commerce City has experienced several periods of economic decline over the years; however, there have also been many successes storybook moments like when Mayor John Weisman coined the phrase "The Heart of Our Town" or when Philips (now Phillips 66) moved their corporate headquarters from Englewood to Commerce City in 1986. Today's economy is based largely on construction services such as engineering and architecture; small businesses located near downtown are prospering thanks to growing consumer demand for goods produced within close proximity including food retailers such as Walmart and restaurants like Chipotle Mexican Grill. Downtown Merchants Association President Cindi Jenner said "There’s always something going on here that makes you excited about this great community."
Commerce City is a city in Moffat County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Commerce City" was first given to the community in 1892 by C. W. Post and Fenton Armitage after their purchase of the town site from J. B. Pratt & Co.. The post office at Commerce City opened on October 1, 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 15, 1916. A new post office was built at Commerce City and operated until it closed on November 3, 1933. In 1907, a train depot and freight yard were built by George Hargrave and Company near the current site of the Aurora Municipal Airport. The depot served as a stop for passenger trains between Commerce City and Aurora until 1949 when Amtrak began providing service to Denver through that station instead. The freight yards were converted into an airport terminal complex known as Gateway Airport which served as the primary airport for both Aurora and Commerce City until its closure in 1974.
