The earliest known physical settlement in what would become Commerce City was made on July 3rd, 1875 by J.D. Payne and John Palfrey when they purchased 640 acres (25 km²) of land from Laughlin Mining Company for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). The town was named after George Washington Matthews who had donated land to the town site in 1872 while he was mayor of Denver. The first store opened in 1880 on Grant Street just south of what is now Union Station. By 1890, there were over 100 businesses in Commerce City with a population of 4,000 people. Copper mining started around this time and quickly became one of the town's primary industries. By 1912, commerce had increased to such an extent that it necessitated construction of two square blocks north off Main Street called "The Square". This addition helped increase business activity during night hours as few stores could be open because traffic congestion caused by demand from customers traveling through downtown during morning rush hour would block intersections along Main Street leading into The Square

FN Communications moved its printing operations from Commerce City to Fort Collins in 1959 and then operated them until 1992 when it merged with National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). The first post office was established at Commerce City on December 7, 1868, under the name "Natrona". It was renamed "Fort Collins" on January 6, 1893, because it had become apparent that Aurora would become the larger city and there was no room for another post office within Aurora limits. The merger of FN communications with National Broadcasting Corporation created one of America's largest media conglomerates and made Commerce City where most NBC programming originated including news programs such as "Meet the Press", "Today", "The Today Show", and many other morning shows that continue today on various networks across North America Commerce City also played host to several golf tournaments during its early years including The Open Championship which took place there in 1903 while other major events likethe PGA Championships (1905), British Open (1910), Umpires' Association Trophy (1920) were also staged here including two editions of Olympic Golf Tournament which took place at Dorney Park near downtown Aurora In 1969-1970 marked a significant change for Commerce City when AIG relocated their corporate headquarters from New York City to nearby Peoria Illinois amid public outcry over pollution inside Manhattan following the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy relief efforts which had taken place just two weeks earlier In 1990 when NBCUniversal merged with Time Warner Entertainment Company these offices were moved back into commerce city proper alongsidethe now defunct American Broadcasting Company television station KUSA 10 which served as both main studios for both Comcast Xfinity cable channels 8½ hours per day as well as airing select NBC programming wasteland outside/ concurrent with KUSA 10 throughout much of Comcast's monopoly era over all entertainment Comcast services area starting around 1995-1996 through various forms of customer service contract negotiations culminating in strike action by numerous employees represented by UTI Local 503 beginning November 5th 1996 until settlement talks resulting on November 29th 1997 led to ratification of a new contract agreement covering all employees representing Comcast services providers including UTI locals 503 effective December 1st 1997
Commerce City is a city in Pueblo County, Colorado, United States. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Commerce City were the Kiowa and Arapaho Indians who populated this area during the 1800s. The town name is taken from Missouri and Arkansas Streets which run through town. In 1876, a post office called "New Beginnings" was established in what is now Commerce City. In 1886, a railroad junction was built just east of town on Colorado Boulevard which served as the commercial center for the area until it closed in 1924. Later that same year, Congress created Pueblo County by including parts of present-day Pueblo and Fort Collins counties within its borders. As part of this change, Commerce City became a separate municipality within Pueblo County. In 1928, Interstate 25 bypassed Commerce City and instead routed south along I-25 corridor between Aurora and Lakewood via Golden Hills airspace for about 10 miles (16 km).
