The Colorado National Guard was first organized on November 6, 1861, in the town of Trinidad. The original unit consisted of a detachment from the 2nd Colorado Infantry Regiment and one battery of artillery. On January 1, 1862, the brigade was redesignated as a regiment and on July 15 became part of the 3rd Brigade in the newly created First Denver Division. In 1864, the brigade was again redesignated as a regiment and on October 25 became part of District No. 5 within Second Brigade in Fourth Division (West) of Union army under command of General George Meade. The brigade served with distinction at Cedar Rapids and Battle Creek before being mustered out on September 30, 1865. During its time with the Union army, the brigades spent most of their time in western Colorado working on fortifications and construction projects. In 1867-68 they took part in several campaigns including those against Cheyenne River Sioux and Arapaho Indians near Fort Larimer while also participating in engagements at Pueblo Bridge, San Miguel Hill and Ford’s Theater. After leaving service with the Union army, some members reenlisted with Confederate forces during Reconstruction while others left for various reasons including marriage or family relocation to Kansas or other states during that time period.eventually all but two companies returned to Colorado after Reconstruction ended which left only one company still active today as The Regimental Museum Company #2 (RM2). The museum began operations in 1967 when it moved from its previous location at Commerce City Municipal Airport to its current site downtown about two blocks east of Main Street between Cherry Street and Sixth Avenue where it remains today open daily 9am-4pm except for holidays . It is now home to more than 100 artifacts from throughout military history from both sidesoftheConfederacyandUnion Army

In 2017, Forbes rated Commerce City as one of the fastest-growing cities in America and cited it as an example for how to grow your city without sacrificing quality or services

Commerce City was founded in 1868 by banker and silver mine owner George Firstenberg and his wife Emma. The city name comes from the first two words in his wife's maiden name: "Commerce." Commerce City began as a small farming town with about 100 residents in 1868 when George Firstenberg opened a silver mine near where the current downtown stands. The Firstenbergs were among the early settlers of what would become Commerce City. Banning legislation at the time prevented anyone from mining within 10 miles of any other settlement, so it was only natural for first years to focus on agriculture and ranching as their primary sources of income. However, over time commerce grew up around those activities; later businesses include an insurance company and two banks. In 1907, after years of development work by leaders such as Mayor John Hruska and Vice Mayor Harry Bryant, Commercial Street became one of Denver's key arterial streets with many stores lining its length today including JCPenney (now Macy's), Sears (then Kmart), Starbucks Coffee & Tea House, Subway sandwich shop/bakeryspot/cafeteria combo restaurant called 'The Workshops', several antique store fronts ('Antiques Corner' being one notable example) along with numerous bars and restaurants over time - giving Commerce City a unique mix of retail outlets anchored by high-end hotels while also maintaining some traditional general store functions like hardware stores or grocers

The town became a major transportation and industrial center during the late 19th century, thanks to its location on the main line between Denver and Phoenix. In the early 20th century, Commerce City experienced a period of growth as it became an important manufacturing center for materials such as cloth, lumber, and clocks.
