The navy's tradition of gifting began with the Continental Congress in 1775, when sailors baked apples as a thank you for their help in distributing supplies during the American Revolution. In 1815, Commodore John C. Fremont presented Admiral David Dixon Porter with a basket filled with apples from his ship "Orion" as an appreciation for Porter's services during the Mexican-American War. In 1903, Rear Admiral Ernest J. King gave a basket of apples to Mayor James Meehan of Denver in honor of King's promotion to Commodore at the age of 65 years old. From 1910 through 1914, gifts were given out monthly to various city officials in Colorado Springs by Commandant First Class Franklin S. Graves Jr., U.S. Naval Reserve Fleet Commander Task Force 13 antisubmarine warfare squadron commander (retired). In 1948, Commodore John Wirtz presented USS Constitution Museum director Clifford Orr with an apple as part of the museum's annual Christmas tree ornaments program. In 1992, Vice Admiral Rickover presented USS President Clinton (CVA-42) Museum Director Linda Lingle With an Apple as part of her annual Christmas Tree ornaments program

One such business that has been located here continuously since its establishment is Apple Computers which moved its original headquarters from California to Mason city near Denver in 1984 before relocating again toCommerceCity two years later. The downtown area has seen an increase of development with several high-rise buildings being built recently including: The John Aird Center for Arts and Culture – formerly known as "The Spectrum" – which features a theater/theater complex; The Town Hall – also formerly known as "The Spectrum" – which houses many civic offices; Oneonta Place -formerly called "Oneonta Village" -which features multiplexes including two AMC theatres; North Park Place -formerly known as "South Park Place" -features multiplexes including one IMAX theatre; and Pikes Peak Equestrian Complex -formerly known as "Pikes Peak Meadows" -offers horseback riding tours throughout much of its acreage

Commerce City is a small town in Weld County, Colorado,United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2000 census and 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greeley-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Commerce City was established on February 17, 1876. The name was changed to Commerce City on December 10th, 1886. On May 3rd of that year, a fire destroyed most of the city center but not before its namesake created arastrophic damage to many businesses and homes. The rebuilt downtown included a new bank and several stores including J H Hunt Company which became one of the largest employers in town after World War II. The current mayor is Democrat John Suthers with term expiringJanuary 1st 2021. He succeeded Republican incumbent Don Waddell who resigned to run for Congress in 2018 after being indicted on federal charges related to his role as an lobbyist for Energy Transfer Partners - a company which received government contracts totaling $1 million during his time as Mayor
Commerce City was founded in 1867 by businessmen John H. Geary and William L. Haggerty as the first permanent city in what is now Colorado. It grew rapidly, becoming a major trade center for the region and later serve as the county seat of Weld County. The city was destroyed by fire in 1899, but quickly rebuilt and became an important economic center again. In 1957, Commerce City was renamed Denver after merger of its two predecessor cities.
