It was founded in 1871 by businessmen and entrepreneurs who saw the opportunity to develop a new railroad stop on the newly formed Rocky Mountain Railroad. The town quickly became known for its processing plants, flour mills, and other businesses that were part of the early industrial growth in the area. The town's notoriety grew as Mining County developed into one of the richest counties in America due to gold discoveries in the area. By 1916, Commerce City had become an important commercial center for parts of western Colorado. In recent decades, Commerce City has experienced a significant resurgence as a center for tourism and education. The town is home to several museums including the History Museum and Art Gallery, which exhibits materials from both local and national history; and the Browning Museum of American Firearms, which features firearms from both pre-20th century America and modern times. The Town of Commerce City was laid out on January 24, 1871 by businessmen Aarons Ladd (1831-1910) and Charles Wickersham (1853-1920). The two men purchased 7 acres along Denver's southern edge for $1 per acre. They soon realized that they had found an ideal location for their new business venture: near what would then be called "the Promontory," or point where Denver's south side meets Jefferson County east of downtown. Ladd started construction on his first mill – also named after him – within weeks of buying the land. By 1872, he had built four more mills across from his original site at 125th Street and Broadway Avenue - all now part of Downtown Commerce City Historic District - making it one of the largest Processing Plants in America at that time! By 1875, Ladd had opened up another mill on South First Street just north of Market Square; this mill became known as Ladd's Flour Mill #2 after Charles Wickersham bought it from John Alder (1794-1868) five years later! This flourmill processed wheat until 1888 when it switched to corn products; it remains operational today as Flour Mill #2 LLC! In 1886, entrepreneur James Fenton moved his leather tannery from Lamar to Commerce City after finding good luck with his cattle while grazing near Fort Lyon Circle on July 4th - exactly 100 years ago this week! In 1893 Fenton organized what would become known as "The Merchants Association" which helped promote commerce throughout southeastern Larimer County bordering Jefferson County during this period; today this organization still exists with offices located adjacent to Masonic Lodge No 1 & 2 at 215 S First St., Suite 309C since 1993! Today much like back then when different aspects brought about increased prosperity within our community some may remember these good old days fondly while others may find them challenging because so many have changed since we first got here……..
