The Denver Army National Guard has been in existence since 1861. The unit became a part of the United States military during World War I and served in several campaigns, including the Spanish-American War. After the war, the Denver A&M Agricultural College was established as an arm of the army and in 1924, it became part of the United States Air Force. The Colorado Army National Guard currently consists of over 155,000 soldiers and airmen across 180 locations throughout Colorado. One of the first gifts given to members of the Denver A&M Agricultural College was a rifle, which had been donated by General John J. Pershing to that institution upon its opening in 1887. Shortly thereafter, another gift was made - a cannonball gun - this time from Major General Edwin Momyer Dodge and his staff at Fort Lyon near Lyons, Colorado. In 1923, Colonel Charles Sibley presented a field artillery piece to the Denver A&M Agricultural College as part of an effort to commemorate their centennial year and also support future military endeavors on campus. Additionally, in 1926 Drury Field School (now Jordan Hall) received its own artillery piece from Major General Amos Nunn's Second Infantry Division stationed nearby at Fort Carson Boulevard and Cherry Creek Road (now Colfax Avenue). This donation marked not only an increase in firepower for our school but also helped make our facility one of America's leading agricultural research institutions! Denver's history with army gift giving goes back even further! In 1892 Mayor Julius Rosenwald contributed $5200 towards purchasing 100 rifles for use by various units within city limits; these rifles would eventually become known as "The Rosenwald Rifles". On November 15th 1916 marking American involvement in World War I (the "Great War"), Mayor Rosenwald presented then Commandant General Herbert Hoover with a set amount of arms annually equivalent to what is now called "Army Christmas Gifts" - 10 cannons each!
