Since the early 1800s, the Colorado coast guard has been a vital part of state and local defense. Today, their service continues through the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area with a corps of more than 400 members. The Coast Guard traces its roots to 1854 when two steamers, The Californian and The Ganges, were sunk in Fremont Bay by A.P. Hill’s privateering squadron during the Gold Rush. Afterdays as a volunteer militia force were short-lived; operations as a revenue cutter and then an armed merchantman forced them into retirement in 1865. In 1895, Rear Admiral George Moffat led an expedition toPort Angeles Harbor in order to determine why certain vessels had stopped shipping there. He discovered that smugglers were using the harbor as a passage between British Columbia and California without having sailed through San Francisco or Seattle. In 1902, Moffat organized what would become the Colorado coastal guard with six boats and one officer as its first detachment. From its inception until 1912, Coast Guard duty was segregated by gender: women served on Revenue Cutters while men served on Merchant Marines (Marine Patrol). However, this changed upon ratification of Title V of the Social Security Act which granted all citizens benefits regardless of race or sex (this law is still in effect today). As part of this change, female officers became eligible for promotion to lieutenant colonel after serving three years on active duty; however they did not receive ensign rank like their male counterparts until 1964 when Assistant Commandant Jack McGee created ranks within coast guard units based on date of commission rather than length of service). In 1976, the Denver Parks and Recreation Department started a Coast Guard gift shop on the corner of 14th Street and Jefferson Boulevard. The shop was open to the public until 1992 when it was closed due to budget cuts. In 2003, a new coast guard museum opened in downtown Denver which features exhibits on maritime history and aesthetics. The store reopened in 2009 as part of the city's celebration of its 100th anniversary as a municipality.
Denver is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado and the county seat of Arapahoe County. The population was 864,821 as of July 2017. Denver is located at 38°27′N 121°15′W, making it the most populous city in Colorado and the sixth most populous city in the United States after New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Miami-Dade County. The first European to visit what is now called Denver was Captain James Hutton who sighted land on July 24, 1776 while traveling from Santa Fe to Montrose with Lieutenant David Thompson. Hutton named this area "New Mexico" but later changed it to "Arapahoe". In 1802, Major George Crook founded Fort Larimer which served as the main military base for Cheyenne Indian Wars against Spanish settlers east of the Animas River. The fort were destroyed by American forces in 1804 but were rebuilt and renamed Fort Lyon in 1806 during Mexican–American War by General Mariano Escobedo as part of his campaign to control eastern Colorado Territory then claimed by Spain as part of Alta California under Mexican rule. The name stuck and Denver became known as "The Vedette" after General Escobedo's wife Vega de la Herradura (1801-1881). In 1859, Denver was selected as temporary capital of newly created Arapaho County when counties were organized following Kansas Territory's admission into statehood that year. By 1863, Denver had become its permanent capital when Arapaho County was merged with Weld County to form new territorial government. As Front Range cities grew increasingly prosperous during this period – aided by an influx of gold seekers from Nevada – political power shifted from Territorial government towards local governments throughout much Western U S . This process accelerated dramatically after 1870 when gold discoveries began occurring throughout central Rockies , culminating with America's entry into World War I . With rapid growth came increased social unrest which led directly to two waves of murders committed by white supremacists between 1915-1920: one at Aurora Avenue & Downing Street in Aurora (known locally as 'The Last Great Race Riot'), followed by another more bombastic outburst around 16th Street & State Capitol Park ([now 30th] Ave & State Capitol Park) on October 25th 1920 (known locally as 'The Red Scare'). These events helped define downtownDenver's less desirable areas such as South Broadway/Alameda St., Sixth Avenue/Main Street NW., East Indian School Road & Cherry Creek Estates near Golden Triangle Shopping Center - also now known collectively simply as 'The Ghetto'. However these days much crime activity takes place elsewhere within DowntownDenver limits including some high end hotels such as $2 billion Wynn Las Vegas and $1 billion Trump International Hotel & Tower - both located across North Quincy St from Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI) Headquarters just south of Adams Morgan neighborhood on Capitol Hill . For years many people incorrectly thought that DowntownDenver refers only to those neighborhoods situated within its boundaries along 12th Street/Broadway West between Delaware Avenue & Interstate 25; however recent major redevelopment has brought significant attention inside DowntownDenver proper including some large mixed use projects like Regal Cinemas District 1 northward along 13th St/Chinatown Blvd., Quicken Loans Arena northeast along I-25 corridor + several otherifestyle mixed use developments like Amazon HQ2 nearby together forming District 3 downtown . These types of large redevelopments are changing how people see DowntownDenver overall - giving it a more modern look while still retaining its historic charm

In 1949, the Department of Homeland Security was created and responsibility for all aspects of maritime security was transferred to the Coast Guard. Denver, Colorado is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado and the county seat of Arapahoe County.As of July 1, 2018, its population was 853,545. The city is located on the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains and is bordered by Lakewood to the northwest, Aurora to the northeast, Pueblo to the east, Golden to the south and east again by Fort Collins. The first European settlers in what would become Denver arrived from Missouri in 1859 and named it "Omaha". In 1861, Brigham Young moved his Mormon Battalion from Iowa to Denver as part of his campaign for control over Utah Territory. When Lincoln was elected president that year and called for a territorial legislature in Salt Lake City due to political unrest at home caused by Kansas annexation (the new state), Denver served as both capital and temporary until Provo became their permanent location on November 15th 1865 when Congress passed an act providing for a Territorial Governor with full authority over all aspects of public life withinits boundaries subject only to congressional approval or veto. In 1872 after construction began on nearby Park Hill Viaduct which linked Park Hill Cemetery with downtown Denver via Market Street/First Avenue (now Union Station), many rich citizens donated land near Westminster Hall so that they could live close enough to commerce but far enough away from crime rates which were then considered appalling. The original park district now occupies much of Downtown District including Colfax Avenue between 9th & 10th Streets NW (what is now State Street) - one block north of Cherry Creek Reservoir - forming one block wide corridor along Larimer Street between 17th & 18th Streets NW (current Auraria Street). It anchored what is now Pine Bluff Avenue NE across from Union Station before making way for continued development along Larimer until it reached today's 16th Avenue/Alameda street intersection just past West Broadway before turning southeast towards Interstate 25
Denver's history can be traced back to the time before Colorado was a state. The area that is now Denver was first populated by Native American tribes, who were also the original miners and developers of the city. The first Europeans to visit the area were French exploration and traders, who named it "Plaindeal" after their captain, François de la plaine. In 1804, Spanish explorer Manuel Armijo explored what is now Denver and named it La Veta for Josephine (the widow of Napoléon Bonaparte). About this same time, a group of Mormons traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois to Boulder in order to start a new Mormon colony in what is now Cherry Creek County. By 1825, however, tensions between Mormons and Mexicans had gotten too high for non-Mormon settlers to continue living in peace and cooperation with each other. By 1828 Spanish land grants had been made totaling 640 square miles (1,600 km²) within what is now Denver limits; these grantees formed the basis of present-day Denver's claim to sovereignty over much of today's north side of Colorado Springs as well as portions east of Aspen Park Mesa. It wasn’t until 1859 when General James Haggerty built Fort St Johns on a bluff overlooking downtownDenver which became known as “The Battery” because it overlooked both Calliope Hill (now Museum Mile) and Westminster Bridge across I-70. This fort constituted one of the earliest military outposts in Colorado Springs; other early posts included First Arsenal at Indian Hills and Second Arsenal at South Broadway & Downing Street near Seventh Avenue & Steele Street today known as Central Tech Area. In 1865 President Andrew Johnson issued executive orders creating Arapaho Nation along with Navajo Nation west of Eagle Pass - opening up much more than just northwest Adams County territory for white settlementino areas which would become part of Denver over time including neighborhoods like Greenwood Village today located east Of Kipling Avenue/South Lamar Boulevard just south Of 28th Street/Pineview Road A few years later in 1870 James Wickersham purchased Lots 1-3 inclusive within modern day North Tower District from Wm Hensley for $5 per acre (.386 hectares). On July 4th 1870 he moved his family into lots 3 & 4 adjacent to lot 1 – becoming onehalf mile away from completion on Englewood Boulevard – starting what would become known as Wickerham Place . On November 25th 1890 Jno Grafton organized Territorial legislature uniting all 23 counties east or northeastof Rocky Mountain National Park creating 12 Districts with John Evans as territorial governor giving jurisdiction over mines etc….DowntownDenver&northsidewere designated districts respectively but no street numbers exist still many historical buildings are unmarked including Hotel Colorado Plaza where Ft St Johns once stood
