The Denver Navy Reserve has been a part of the United States military since the early days of the country. In 1916, when Colorado became a state, the navy was organized and assigned to be headquartered in Fort Defiance. The first naval unit stationed in Denver was the Destroyer Squadron One. The squadron sailed out from Georgetown on July 4th, 1916 to patrol waters near Moffat Lake. Over time, other Naval Units were stationed in Denver including: Destroyer Squadron Two (1946-1948), Helicopter Battalion Two (1972-1975), and Missile Battalion Three (1986-1991). In 1987, Fleet Air Wing Ten moved from Buckley AFB to Naval Base El Centro and formed Patrol Flight One which served as an air wing for naval units deployed worldwide with special assignment aviation missions such as Search and Rescue, Seawardbound operations, humanitarian relief efforts etc. Naval Base El Centro closed its doors in 2003 after over 40 years of service to America’s maritime forces; however remnants of Naval Air Station Victorville can still be seen today at El Paso International Airport!
