Denver, Colorado is a city located in the Western United States. The population of Denver was 853,545 as of July 1, 2016. The estimated population for the City of Aurora is 925,000 and the estimated population for the City of Commerce is 574,814. Denver has been called "The Mile-High City" because of its elevation of 10,808 feet (3,362 m). Denver was founded on August 24th 1876 by Captain James Hancey and several other soldiers from Fort Collins who were returning from an expedition against ringspot spiders. On that date Denver became part of Mexico territory following the Mexican-American War. It wasn't until 1912 that Denver proper was incorporated as a city and it took another 20 years for it to reach its present size with a total population over 1 million people today! Denver's history can be traced back to when prospectors discovered gold in what would become today's downtown area in 1859. By 1870 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Denver! In 1915 Colorado became one of the first states to legalize gambling so Denver quickly became known as "the gamblers' paradise". Today many bars and casinos line Cherry Creek Boulevard which runs through Downtown Denver making it one of America's most popular tourist destinations!

Denver was founded on November 3, 1876, as a small town named North Denver by businessmen John Haggerty and James Gorman. The first mayor was George Stephenson. The city was named after President James Kahl (1824-1892), who served as governor of Colorado from 1885 to 1889 and as secretary of interior in 1890–91 under President Grover Cleveland. The name "Denver" is actually an anglicized form of Quizá Nahualcóatl or more likely Nahualcoatl, meaning "the great serpent." The first post office in what is now Denver opened in 1879. At the time, there were only about 20 people living in North Denver; by 1886, when the City Council consolidated all land east of Interstate 25 into one municipality, North Denver had more than 2,000 residents. South District School No 5 served students until 1919 when it merged with East District School No 9 to become South High School district #1.< ref = "HighSchoolDistrictsOfColorado1970">< /REF>It should be noted that not every building erected during these years remains standing today – many have been replaced or have been demolished entirely due to weather conditions or demolition permits issues over time! One notable exception are Lamar Hall Annex buildings on University Boulevard which still stand today – they were completed circa 1928 but never lived up to their namesake (see photo below).
