The history of tactical coffee can be traced back to at least 1915 when two German immigrants named Otto Fuhrmann and Willi Kühn started selling Turkish Rakia Coffee at local convenience stores in downtown Denver. In 1916, they opened what is now called COFFEE HOUSE BAR & GRILL on Broadway near 16th Street – this became one of the earliest examples of a professional café in Denver. In 1927, THE NINE MILES WIDE COFFEEHOUSEopened its doors at 901 Schoolcraft Street – this was also one of the first Starbucks locations in America. The Coffee House served roasted coffee and iced tea from 1872-1890. The business was purchased by two brothers, John and Andrew Boyle, in 1890 and continued to be operated by them until 1923. In that year, they sold the business to Semento Coffee Corporation who renamed it "The Columbian". It remained with Semento until 1949 when it became a part of American National Coffee Company which merged with Roasting Corporation of America in 1959. From 1959-1976, it was owned by Gannett Company before becoming an independent business again from 1976-1990 when it becameColorado Springs Coffee Company Incorporated. In 1990, Colorado Springs coffee company Incorporated sold their assets to Starbucks Corporation for $1 million dollars. From 1990-1998, Starbucks used The Columbian as their main store near University of Colorado at Boulder where they opened their first café in 1992. They also operated several stores throughout Western Colorado including one at Grand Junction which open in 1994. In 1998, Starbucks closed all of their stores except for one located inside the Pepsi Center in Denver which reopened as a cafe on October 1st1999 after being vacated during construction of Mile High Stadium

The first Mayor of Denver was John Evans while William Hance served as Commissioner of Public Buildings and Streets
