Air Force gift history in Englewood, Colorado began with the activation of the Colorado Air National Guard at Peterson Field on May 17, 1941. The Buffaloes became part of the U.S. Army Air Forces and were redesignated as the 82nd Bomb Wing on July 15, 1944. The wing was activated again on December 16th, 1945 as a result of World War II. It was equipped with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers and took off from Peterson Field for its first mission on Christmas Eve1945—a bombing run over New York City. Today, the wing is one of two in the USAF that still flies Boeing B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and is responsible for providing overwater support to Operation Neptune’s Spear during Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. The wing also operates KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft to provide cargo transport services to locations such as Afghanistan and Iraq. In addition to its bomber armament, the wing has also been awarded numerous aviation honors including four Distinguished Unit Citations (DUC), thirteen air Medals (AM) and fifteen Crosses of Bronze (CB). Additionally, it has several memorialized along Interstate 25 outside Peterson Field—including one dedicated toLt Colonel James Fenton who died while flying his last missions withinwing in 1992 after leading an abortive strike against Baghdad airport while under command of Maj General Curtis LeMay Jr.—the man who called himself “The Boss” when he served as Commander Bomber Command during World War II

The 1st Air Force was activated inEnglewood, Colorado on December 8, 1947. The unit's first commander was General James F. Hixson. On November 5, 1951 the 1st AF became one of the first USAF wings to be equipped with the Boeing A-36L Super Hercules transport aircraft. This aircraft was used for range and bombing missions in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. In May 1964 the wing received its own Boeing E-3B Sentry AWACS airborne warning and control system from Lockheed Martin Corporation. In 1969/70 1st AF became a member of Tactical Air Command (TAC). On February 24th 1970 units were authorized to fly the McDonnell Douglas C-8 Crusader commandair which replaced their Boeing E-3B Sentry AWACSs. 1st AF then put into effect Operation Thunderjet where they flew 500+ sorties over targets in South Vietnam as part of NATO forces against North Vietnam while also providing airlift supplies to allied contingents fighting there
Englewood is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,525 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Englewood–Aurora–Lakewood metropolitan area. The village of Englewood was founded by settlers in 1868. The first post office opened in 1870. By 1887, the population had grown to 2,500 andEnglewood became an incorporated municipality in 1912. In 1922, it annexed the adjacent communities of Brighton and Centennial which had a combined population of 7,000. The Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Area was created in 2000 when Aurora and Lakewood merged to form one city with a combined population of over 100,000 people. As part of this merger, Englewood lost its status as a municipally-controlled municipality and became one of the five constituent towns within the new metropolitan area. Today, Englewood remains an important community with close ties to both Aurora and Lakewood; however, its economy has shifted more towards services than manufacturing or agriculture. This has led to some controversy over how much importance Englewoods local government should attach to economic development outside its borders – particularly since these services often lack significant tax incentives from either city governments or state coffers. Additionally, some residents maintain that their concerns about quality of life in their rural surroundings outweigh any benefits conferred by incorporation into larger cities like Aurora or Lakeport
