Englewood is a small town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Englewood post office opened in 1876. The name was changed to Englewood in 1907 and to its current name in 1922. The town was named after George Washington Engel (1819-1891), an American lawyer and politician who served as United States Attorney General from 1889 to 1891 and as a member of the Colorado State Senate from 1861 to 1863. The name comes from two early settlers, Isaac Engel and Samuel Horsburgh, both of whom were natives of New York City. In 1881, Engelwald & Company erected a sawmill on the south side of town to produce lumber for local building projects. By 1890, the mill had become one of the largest in Arapaho County and had produced over 1 million boards/mesh per year for local homes and businesses. In 1907, Engelwood formed a city charter with an original population of just under 100 residents; it grew rapidly through annexation by other towns until it reached its current size of 592 residents in 1960. Most notably during this time period Englewood experienced rapid growth as a result of several major expansions including: (1) incorporation as a village in 1916; (2) annexation by Aurora in 1965; (3) incorporation as an independent city status on November 3rd, 1976 following approval by voters via referendum; and most recently (4) designation as "City Of Englewood" on December 15th 2009 following successful battle against annexation efforts by neighboring Arvada which successfully sought to add 2 square miles to their municipality without first consulting the citizens or ballot measure landslide that approved creation of "City Of Englewood". Today's economy focuses largely upon education with many businesses located within downtownEnglewood which has seen steady redevelopment over the years culminating with completion of several high-end development projects such as The Shops at One Meridian Plaza completed in 2013 followed closely by Synergy Place - home to Thornton’slargest employer - which opened its doors late last year bringing more than 1500 jobs directly to the community across multiple sectors providing much-needed economic stability amidst continuing challenging environmental conditions throughout much of Rocky Mountain National Park .

By 1900, the population had grown to over 1,000 residents and the city was incorporated in 1912.
