The United States Army was founded in 1775, and the first soldiers were called to duty in 1802. The military played a significant role during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), and the Civil War (1861-65). In World War I (1914-1918), America’s participation led to its largest peacetime army ever. The Great Depression (1929-33) led to reduction of active service, but World War II (1939-1945) created an all-time American military might. After the war, there was a large increase in peacetime service with little effort devoted to armament development or modernization. However, since the early 21st century there has been a renewed focus on defense spending and modernization of the US military. Englewood is a town in Eagle County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Englewood post office was established in 1876. The name was changed to Englewood in 1907 after Arthur Englehart, a mine owner and member of the Colorado State Senate. In 1912, the Post Office Building (now the Englewood Community Center) was built on what is now Second Street in central Englewood. In 1923, Engelwood High School opened as a coeducational public school with students from grades 9 through 12. In 1962, Engelwood became an all-girls school under the name Belleview Girls School until it became fully male-dominated in 1978. The city's first grocery store opened in 1911 on Emerson Avenue east of Broadway Boulevard. A second store opened south of Broadway Boulevard on Hegewisch Road about two years later. By 1915, there were six grocery stores and two feed stores operating withinEnglewoods limits along with three schools: one for boys and girls only (Bellevue High), one for boys and girls combined (Englewoods Normal School), and one open to both sexes (Englewoods Junior/Senior High). The 1920s saw significant growth due to coalmining but also saw much development including new homes being erected around town as well as business improvement such as razing of older buildings and reconstruction using more modern construction techniques which facilitated economic growth over time even while maintaining social stability by providing housing opportunities for working class citizens who could not afford finer things or lifestyle changes outside their small town upbringing
