Englewood is a town in Rio Grande County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Canon City–Pueblo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Englewood comes from "ene glen", meaning "open space." The first settler in Englewood was John Doherty in 1872. He bought of land and built a log cabin called Doherty's Glen on the east side of town near the creek that later became known as White River. In 1887, Wm. Aiken bought of land in present-day Englewood and built his house on what is now Main Street. Aiken's house still stands and is used as a museum today. In 1893, William Fenton organized a group of farmers to form the Rio Grande Land Association to improve irrigation systems for their crops in central Colorado. The association donated 106 acres (40 hectares) north of Englewood to establish what would become Englewood Cemetery. On May 10, 1907, when Colo., 1st Lt., George Armstrong Custer was killed during World War I at Little Big Horn, Englewood mourned with many other towns throughout Colorado as he lay buried at Fort Worth National Cemetery near Denver along side such luminaries as Andrew Carnegie and James Buchanan Johnson Sr.. On July 12th 1920 residents adopted an ordinance proclaiming July 12th 'George Armstrong Custer Day' in memory of this exciting event which helped fuel city growth over 50 years ago! It lies on the edge of Grand Lake National Wildlife Refuge and is part of the Englewood–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Englewood had a total area of , all of it land. The first white person to live in what is now Englewood was Rev. George Washington Carver who came to look for a place to settle in 1881. He named his tract "Carver's Land" after himself and his brother-in-law Dr. David Carver (founder of Aurora). In 1892, Charles Hite opened a grocery store in what is now Park Meadows Shopping Center and started selling groceries from his truck. This led to the development of Park Meadows as one of Englewood's most important commercial districts during its early years. During World War II, many civilians relocated to Englewood because they were forced into service against their will or lacked transportation home due to wartime restrictions on travel outside
