Englewood is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. The name "Englewood" was given to the town by General George Engle and his wife Sarah in 1868 while they were on vacation in Aspen. The name means "place where Engel trees grow." The first settlement in what is now Englewood was made on the west side of Longmont lake by farmers who brought over some cypress logs from Oregon and built a cabin there in 1876. A post office called Englewood had been established in 1875, but it failed to take off and was closed by 1880. In 1893, John Dicken bought 640 acres (2 km2) of land east of Longmont Lake and began building an irrigation canal that would become known as Dicken Canal Park. The town began to form around this center with businesses started such as Engine House & Machine Shop (1899), groceries (1901), Ford dealership (1920), Dicken's department store (1921), etc., until World War II when most growth came from housing development which reached its peak during the 1945-1950 period when more than 4,000 homes were built within a two-mile radius of Dicken’s store alone. After World War II ended, much industrial activity stopped and Englewood lost much of its early economic diversity because many companies moved away or changed their names or merged with others outside of Colorado during this time period. However, recent redevelopment has begun focusing on arts and cultural uses including new art galleries/museums/theatre District One opened in late 2013 which contains 5 theaters along with restaurants and shops; district two also includes a new park adjacent to McCarty High School named after former Mayor Herb McCarty; as well as plans for an arena for the Colorado Rapids professional soccer team which are still pending final approvals from local government officials
