Englewood is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. Englewood is part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. It is bordered by Westminster to the north and east, Jefferson to the south and west, Aurora to the northwest and northeast, and Brighton to the southwest. The firstEnglewood settlement was established in 1868 when two men named John Engler and Daniel Bowers moved from Illinois to settle on a rancho near what is now Englewood. The name "Englewood" was derived from an old Indian word meaning " settlements near a stream." The first post office in Englewood wasestablished in 1875. The present post office building was built in 1912 and has been used as a library since 1978. In 1907, Engelhard Cramer founded an oil company that became known as Cramer Petroleum Company Ltd.. In 1924, Engelhard Cramer donated land for what would become Bear Creek Regional Airport which serves as today's main airport for the town of Englewood. In 1957, Engelhard Cramer donated $1 million dollars towards construction of Rocky Mountain High School which would serve both Englewood and neighboring communities including Westminster and Jefferson. Rocky Mountain High School opened its doors in 1959 with students from local elementary schools serving as their first teachers. This institution has continued its growth over time reaching enrollment levels nearing 20000 students today! Overhead costs associated with this project have been amortized over time resulting in significant savings for taxpayers! On July 1, 1876, Englewood was created as a town in Arapaho County, Colorado. It was named for Wm. B. Englewood of Hartford, Connecticut who donated the land to the town. The first post office opened in 1881 and the first school was built in 1885. The townsite changed hands several times before it became part of Aspen Township on July 1, 1912. On February 17, 1915, Aspen Township merged with Pikes Peak Township to form Aurora Township. On January 1, 1932 Aurora Township consolidated with Englewood to form Englewood-Aurora Municipal District which is still in existence today.
