Erie is bordered by Lakewood to the north and east, Thornton to the south and west, and Broomfield to the northwest. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Erie in 1825 with three families from Germany: Friedrich Wilhelm August Weininger (born 1795), his wife Elisabeth Kapp (1797-1868), and their two children Johann Christoph Weininger (1807-1873) and Emilie Augusta Weber (born 1809). The land that would become Erie was bought by Captain John Cohan of the U.S. Army under an agreement made March 1, 1827 during Major General David Hunter's occupation ofDenver City after its conquest by Joshua Arapaho on January 6th of that year. On July 4th of that same year Captain Cohan sold 640 acres (26 km²) east of downtown on Canisteo Creek to Solomon Goldsborough for $2 per acre ($640 / km²). This purchase marked the beginning of what would be known as "The Gold Rush" in western Colorado because so many people were looking for new opportunities when gold was discovered at Sulfur Springs on February 14th at an altitude of 513 meters near Aspen Hillock about 25 miles northeast of Euclid in Boulder County 9 years later on November 17th, 1848 Erie's growth started slow due to inhospitable soil conditions which included high levels of arsenic, lead and cadmium; however early entrepreneurs such as John Braidwood developed transportation methods other than horseback travel which allowed Wiggins Ferry Road leading into town from Westminster to serve as a main artery connecting different parts of Weld County while also providing access to coal mining operations located along Buffalo Creek outside Town limits As more people came into contact with gold they started coming up with new ways to get it out there including hiring mulescarting routes over mountainsides followed by just a few days ride down below where lode ores were concentrated In 1861 farmers George Wurtzel established a sawmill adjacent to First Congregational Church southwest corner Genesee Street building number one still standing today across from Fourth Avenue North . That mill operated until 1924 when two accidents caused it within minutesof each other resulting in loss or destruction Of over 2 million dollars worth Of lumber . Erie was founded by veterans of World War I who were looking for a new home after their service in Europe. When they found that what they were looking for wasn't available in Denver or Kansas City, they decided to establish themselves in what is now Erie. They named their town after John Fetterman, an American general who had fought with distinction during World War I. The first settler was George Whitehead, who arrived in 1887. In 1907, when organized towns began appearing throughout Colorado Territory (later Colorado), Erie was chosen as the capital of Larimer County because it had a population of 100 people or more and good roads connecting it to other settlements.[2] The first commercial enterprise established in Erie was a bakery run by Augustus Healy & Brothers from Center City on Main Street.
