The Erie County Coast Guard first provided services in 1892. In 1912, the Coast Guard was created as a separate agency from the Sheriff’s Department and it has continuously been providing essential law enforcement and coastal protection services to the community of Erie since that time. The Coast Guard's main mission is to protect life, property and resources on our inland waters; however, we also provide many other valuable services such as disaster response, Search and Rescue, public education and training. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has consistently given back to the community by creating opportunities for people to learn about safe travel through educational programs, sponsoring donated prizes for local competitions and donating equipment or supplies to various organizations. This year marks the centenary of the Coast Guard's service in Erie County - it’s an honor for us to continue giving back to this important area.

It soon became an important commercial center due to its location at an ideal crossing point for travelers travelling betweenDenver and Fort Collins. In 1870, Erie became part of the newly formed Colorado Territory; during this time, it experienced rapid growth with its new courthouse and jail being completed within only five years. Despite this progress, economic conditions in Erie were challenging during much of the 20th century due to several factors including rising production costs associated with American industry postwar (seeowntown development). However, over time those challenges have been overcome through various community initiatives such as tax increment financing (TIF) which has helped support downtown development while also providing financial resources for other aspects of local economy; job creation through entrepreneurship programs; and infrastructure redevelopment efforts such as projects like light rail transit which has facilitated economic growth and increased access to quality education for all residents.
