Erie, Colorado is a small town in northeastern Colorado that was founded in 1859. Erie is the county seat of Larimer County and lies on the southern edge of the Denver metro area. The population was 10,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Erie were Spanish explorers who sailed up the Pecos River in 1810. They named it Santa Fé because they thought it would be a safe place for their men to rest after exploring the new frontier in Mexico and New Mexico. In 1847, John Coyle emigrated from Ireland with his family and began trading goods along what is now I-25 north of Buffalo Gap on Clear Creek below Aspen Hill Reservoir. In 1850 he became one of America's first entrepreneurs when he organized a wagon train carrying supplies overland to Fort Bridger near present day Loveland. His company became known as Coyle & Company and prospered until 1862 when hostilities between Kansas and Nebraska led to an armed conflict that destroyed most of Omaha City (now Omaha) east of Keystone Lake. In 1860, Elisha Kent Cooke purchased 1,000 acres (500 hectares) northeast of Erie for $10 per acre from Jacob Heizer for use as a cattle drive route between Iowa City and Council Bluffs on the Great Plains. Cooke devoted himself to agriculture; however, his vision failed to materialize due to lack of support from government or private insurers who refused to risk their lives or money investing in an unproven scheme; also industry had not yet discovered farmland capable of growing crops high enough quality for human consumption so feed prices continued escalating which inhibited production by farmers while encouraging investment by city dwellers looking for potential returns on their investments (>$1/acre). The portion now occupied by Erie was reached by pioneers during 1871–72 when George Atherton established Fort Lyon near what is now Lyonsville following troops' victory over Cheyenne Indians at Washita River where General Orvil Sweetman accomplished what previous military commanders could not: destroying any significant threat posed by hostile Native Americans living within easy striking distance across much unsettled land westward into Oklahoma Territory then under US jurisdiction since 1787 including what are today Cheyenne County, Wyoming vernacularly called "the Black Hills".
