During World War II, a large number of Americans turned to coffee as a source of sustenance due to rationing restrictions. In Erie, Colorado, many business owners found ways to make use of the plentiful resources available during the war years such as peanuts and corn; these businesses converted former vacant buildings into cafes and restaurants serving fresh roasted coffee every morning and evening until finally closing their doors at nightfall.

Erie, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of west-central Colorado. The population was 7,554 at the 2010 census. Erie is the county seat of Weld County and it is located on the east bank of the Erie River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of downtown Denver. The first European to visit Erie was Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He landed on what is now the eastern shore of Lake Erie on October 14, 1542, during his third voyage across North America. On July 1, 1795, George Washington set out from Fort Necessity on Beaver Island for what became known as The White House Expedition into Canada; he and his army journeyed overland through present-day Erie and Niagara Falls before reaching Detroit in late September 1795. In 1854, John Fetterman built a wharfage at Buffalo Bayou on Lake Erie for vessels hauling coal from Pennsylvania to New York City. The harbor became an important transportation link between Buffalo and Cleveland after General David Hunter's canal system opened in 1825. In 1857–58 Andrew Carnegie started construction of one of America's largest steel mills in nearby Scranton – this mill would later become part of United Steel Works (USW). In 1907–08 James Buchanan Polk Jr., then president of Mexico City Olympics Committee and ambassador to Russia under President Theodore Roosevelt visited Erie while attending that city's Olympic Games; he praised USW's "excellent" facilities thereabouts and called Buffalo Bayou "the most beautiful body of water I ever saw." A year later Polish immigrants founded Thornburgh Township in western Erie with its own post office soon afterwards. During World War II aerial bombing raids by American B-24s against Japanese targets killed more than 2,500 people in northeast Ohio including 350 women who were working as nurses at a hospital near Battle Creek;[2] these raids also destroyed much industry around Toledo and other cities within easy range for air attack;[3] however some local citizens chose not to participate or face reprisals from U.S military forces: among these were thousands of men who sympathized with Japan but opposed MacArthur's drive southward towards their homeland; many eventually ended up imprisoned or dead inside concentration camps where they suffered heinous conditions such as forced labor or exposure to poison gas.[4][5]

By 1971, Starbucks had become the first company to offer whole bean (not pre-packaged) roast on site for purchase or takeaway beginning with its first store location at 7th and Dearborn Street in Chicago Illinois
