Erie is located on the south bank of the Susquehanna River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Denver and 40 miles (64 km) north-northwest of Fort Collins. The land that became Erie was first settled by Native Americans in the late seventeenth century. In 1792, after a military campaign against the Comanche people, General George Washington discovered a site for an new settlement called Tellico Pass which lay between Clear Creek to the west and Eaton Creek to the east. After being criticized by Congress for choosing undeveloped country instead of developing it into towns or villages, Washington granted a map patent to Nicholas Miller in 1814 for what is now Weld County. Miller's company built mills on Beaver Dam Creek and developed other properties along streams such as Buffalo Creek until 1830 when they moved their operations to Susquehanna River Valley where they began developing what is now downtown Erie with its current name: "The Town That Was". By 1840, Miller had laid out streets and erected buildings including churches, stores and homes; he also started marketing apples from his millinery shop on Main Street today known as Nickelodeon Alley inside city limits before moving production outdoors to nearby Loveland in 1846 In 1870 David Barbour established himself as an agriculturalist in what is now western Greene County while real estate developer James Irvine bought most of what would become eastern Erie from NicholasMiller two years later In 1902 John Cavanaugh organized Canoe Airlines serving captive passengers overland from Buffalo Airport with chartered planes travelling upriver until 1977 before deregulation ended passenger service .
