Erie, Colorado is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, located on the north bank of the North Fork of the Green River. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. Erie is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Erie were Spanish expeditions led by Hernando de Soto in 1540 and 1541. The area was Pryor's Land and claimed by Spain in 1763 as part of Alta California under Mexico's viceroyalty. In 1876, after American Abolitionist John Brown invaded Kansas and started a civil war that ended with his death, a group of settlers from Erie landed on an island in Grand Lake near present day Topeka and began building a cabin or log storehouse called Fort Snelling. This original fort served as an outpost for settlers traveling between the prairies of eastern Colorado and central Wyoming. In 1887, gold was discovered at Silverton Creek along Ute Pass west of today's El Paso County while prospectors were working the Clearwater vein in what is now southeastern Moffat County; this opened up new opportunities for agriculture in northeast Weld County and attracted attention from miners who set up stores at Silverton but also struck claims on nearby east side properties which became known as "the Hill Country." To finance these operations local citizens raised $350,000 through land sales beginning December 1, 1886 – one week before United States President Grover Cleveland delivered his famous “Fourteen Point Peace Plan” to Congress authoring America’s entry into World War I.
