Erie, Colorado is a small town on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Erie is located in Pueblo County and has a land area of just over square miles. The next year, Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado explored the area and named it San Miguel de Erizo after St. Michael, patron saint of Mexico City. In 1753, General George Washington's army passed through Pueblo on their way to battle with France at Quebec City. As they rode past Erie, they noticed an impressive rock formation called The Rock of Ages and called it this because it seemed to be eternal. In 1869, settlers from Kansas arrived in what is now Erie and development started quickly. By 1875, there were two hotels and twenty-six families living in what is now downtown Erie. One reason for rapid growth was the discovery of oil reserves in Weld County around this time – oil was discovered near Buffalo Bill Water Works by John D’Arcy Welles in 1901 and production began immediately. During World War I (1914-18), many soldiers from Erie served in the US Expeditionary Forces fighting on various fronts including Champagne country west of Paris; Salerno; Anzio; Rome; Naples; Salonika—and Normandy as part of Operation Overlord (the invasion of Normandy). Later that year, a group of local volunteers band together to form the American Legion Post 913 which later became known as “Erie” Legionnaires due to its proximity to Buffalo Bill Waterworks where service began on July 4th 1918 – nearly eighty years after Buffalo Bill had founded his water system! The city experienced rapid growth during its early years with construction projects such as the creationof Central Park which helped increase property values while also creating jobs for locals. However, by 1920s economic conditions had deteriorated due to global recession caused by increased competition from other countries along with increased transportation costs brought about by improvements made during World War II including bridges over Niagara River connectingNiagara Falls with Chicago and other major cities across North America. This led to urban sprawl throughout much of western United States culminating in suburban expansion into former farmland within city limits .As a result of these changes social services were tightened up leading eventually to large numbers homeless or seasonal workers operating businesses out-of-doors without proper health insurance or job security
