Erie is a city in east-central Colorado, United States. Erie was founded in 1867 by the Wyoming Territorial Legislature as the town of Northaven. The city was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1846 to 1849 and as Commander-in-Chief of the American Expedition against Mexico in 1847. Erie became a state capital in 1907, and it has since been its second most populous city after Denver. Erie is home to The Second Mile business district, which includes one of the largest concentration of independentlyowned businesses in the Rocky Mountains. The first settlers to what is now Erie were Native Americans who lived near Fort Union and other Indian villages during the early years of their land grant fromthe Ulysses S. Grant Administration. In 1836, John Dickson founded Dickson City on land that later became part of Erie when he donated it to the people of this area for settlement and development. On July 9, 1861, construction began on what would become known as Buffalo Street by local businessmen George Fenton and Lorenzo Anthony with funds provided by Andrew Johnson through his Treasury Department investigations into organized crime at that time known as “the Kansas Panic” that had originated in Missouri two years earlier. The street opened up what are now downtown Buffalo and much of north central Erie on December 12, 1861; just over one year later on January 17th due to heavy snowfall along Buffalo Street many stores were closed or moved out when Main Street reopened following a storm that demolished several homes near where it intersects Buffalo Street today In 1865–1868 (one year after General James K Polk's visit), construction began on what would become State Capitol Building across from present day First Niagara Bank building at Second Avenue/Fayette Place NW; original design called for an opera house rather than a legislative building but changed upon completion due to financial difficulties encountered during its construction Construction continued until May 4th 1870 when all work stopped due to lack of money resulting from US Civil War efforts; new Capitol was dedicated by Governor David Capps with Nathan Bedford Forrest officiating It housed both House & Senate Chambers until February 14th 1886 when Secretary Of State Horace Greeley ordered use restrictions placed upon both chambers due to concerns about unsanctioned political activities occurring there w/o government sanction; chamber activity resumed soon thereafter wit& approval from Board OF Regents #1following fire alarm brought about by unauthorized regatta taking place within & adjacent thereto which destroyed several buildings (& injured many)
Erie was founded in 1855 by Hon. David Beatty and his brother, James Beatty. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie-Lansing Railroad in 1857, and by 1861 it had a population of 5,000. In 1865, the town became the county seat of Erie County. The population increased to 25,000 by 1880; and to 50,000 by 1910. By 1915, Erie had become an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people.
