The United States Navy deployed gift history in Erie, Colorado during the first world war. The USS Constitution and USS Monitor were both decommissioned after World War I, but their eventual donation to the American Museum of Naval History was not realized until 1945. The Constitution had been laid down in 1814 as a privateer ship of the Massachusetts Bay Colony navy. She was purchased by the Navy in 1916 and served as flagship of the 5th Fleet from 1917-1920. It is considered that she was one of the most successful warships of her time. When World War I broke out, President Wilson ordered all American warships to be mobilized into battle zones. The Constitution sailed for Europe on October 14th, 1916 with Captain Charles Wohlstetter aboard as executive officer. After reaching France on November 3rd they participated in various operations such as Arras-Lille (November 17), Ypres-Aachen (December 7), Overlord (January 8) and Vimy Ridge (February 9). Finally they arrived back at Times Square on April 10th after successfully completing twelve campaigns including service off Belleau Wood, Somme and Verdun where shelled more than 2 million enemy troops and destroyed over 100 bridges alone. On July 3rd, 1919 she sailed back to New York City loaded with military supplies and equipment following victory at Tsushima which ended Japan’s attempt to start another world war. Captain Wohlstetter was posthumously awarded his Medal of Honor for this campaign which included destroying a Japanese battleship at Nagasaki despite heavy fire from her other portslayers who had taken refuge inside the city walls! This event added further notoriety to captain Wohlstetter who died just two months later from injuries sustained while leading his ship through an area marked “No Trespassing” by then Commanding Officer Albrecht Hauptmann! As part of USS Constitution Pte John Halsey wrote: "In these hard times Americans will remember her [Constitution] always with gratitude because no man ever deserted his country in its hour of need." In 1945 when this wars ended America again sent its largest warship -the USS Enterprise -to serve in European duty during Operation Overlord bringing about Victory in Europe Day celebrations throughout America!
