Erie is a city in and the county seat of Erie County, Colorado, United States. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora metropolitan area. Erie was founded in 1887 by farmers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who came to southwest Colorado to start new lives. In 1915, Erie became an independent city and adopted a green flag as its symbol. The first white person to live in what is now Erie was John Herschel who landed onshore at Sandusky Bay on July 10, 1827. He named his land "Erie" after his home state of Pennsylvania and built a cabin near the present-day intersection of State Road 9 north and US 20 east. The first post office in Erie opened in 1885 under the name of Lancaster but it changed its name to Erie six years later because it had become clear that residents were from all over southwestern Colorado Territory when they voted to form their own city. In 1915, when Boulder County was created from portions of Brighton and Larimer counties, Erie became one of its two cities – along with Aspen – within Boulder County's newly established boundaries. At that time there were no water supplies or other services available for residents outside the City limits so citizens turned to public works projects such as building reservoirs or constructing streetlights (the latter being done through automated systems). Today's downtown contains many relics dating back to this era including the original Carnegie Library which served as both a business district and social hall during Buffalo Bill Cody's 1893 visit to town; also preserved are several early transportation facilities including an iron bridge across Beaver Creek which crossed over Route 66 just north of downtown; and four miles (6 km) long Railroad Avenue connecting Park Hill with Lafayette Lake near Aspen before turning northeast towards Highway 6 south past Zionsville before terminating at Scranton Road northwest of town limits

The first people to live in Erie were the Arapaho and they arrived in 1872 from what is now Oklahoma. The first post office was established in Centreville on October 25, 1873 by George Wills Folsom with the name of "New Town". Industrial development began early in Erie's history with the opening of an oil refinery by Standard Oil Company in 1903. The company shut down its operations in 2008 but still leaves a legacy as one of the largest employers within downtown Erie for over 100 years. Other major employers include PepsiCo (including its manufacturing plants), Northrop Grumman Corporation (the world's largest operator of electronic systems intelligence products and services), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (the country's second-largest tire manufacturer) and PBF Energy Inc., which operates two large coal-fired power plants located near downtown Erie: One built primarily during World War II and dedicated to powering steel mills throughout Western Pennsylvania; and another rebuilt following a fire that destroyed most of downtown Erie in 2006. Many famous landmarks are located within or close toowntown Erie including Carnegie Hall (which opened its doors on October 16th 1893), Wells Fargo Bank Tower (opened December 15th 1905), Stroudsburg State University (founded 1910), Pegula Arena (/ˈpɛgwærə/; originally called First Niagara Center before being purchased by Buffalo Sabres owner Glen Murray) and Keystone Lake Park (/kræksᵻn/; also known as simply Keystone Lake). In addition, several smaller parks have been created or renovated within walking distance of downtown such as Robert Hoehn Park (), Williston Park (), Scotch Plains Village () and Onondaga Falls (). There are also several lakes within walking distance including Keystone Lake (), Big Beaver Creek (), Little Beaver Creek () and Whiteface Reservoir (). Erie has seen many changes through its history both good AND bad - some that remain today while others have disappeared entirely like Industry Boulevard which ran concurrently along Main Street from east to west until it was demolished around 1990s because it conflicted with new developments going up opposite main street!
