The first Europeans to visit what is now Erie were French traders and fur trappers who came through the area in 1694. The town was founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1871 as a railroad station on the South Platte River. It became an important center for steel production during the 20th century and has been home to several large companies including Western Electric, General Motors and PepsiCo. In 2004, Erie was named one of "America's Great Cities" by Forbes magazine. The history of Erie goes back over 500 years to Dutch traders who traveled along what are now Routes 24 and 26 from Amsterdam to Denver in search of new trade routes with Native Americans. On October 9, 1795, George Washington made his historic trek from Fort Leavenworth up the North Platte River valley to meet with Chief Joseph at White Sands Mesa near present day Englewood Park in what would become Denver. When he arrived at Montrose post office (now within Englewood), he ordered mail delivered direct from New York City instead of having it carried downriver across Missouri before being routed through Kansas City for delivery into Pennsylvania's Lancaster County In 1871 Andrew Carnegie established his steel works here when railroads reached this area after crossing the South Platte River on their way eastward towards Chicago and points southwards. Steel production continued until 1965 when all plants closed because of technological advancements in other industries such as aluminum production which took place elsewhere at that time. Today remnants of these early mills can still be seen around town; especially around milepost 22 on US Highway 6 where two small pipelines still run today carrying water used for mill operations into Lake Erie some 150 feet below ground level! During World War I Memorial Day weekend (April 11-13) 1918, demonstrators marched through downtown streets chanting "No war without bread" while waving American flags and singing patriotic songs like "My Country 'Tis Of Thee." Over 1 million people participated in nationwide protests against America's entry into World War I that erupted throughout many cities across America including Buffalo Niagara Falls

Erie, Colorado is a small town in the San Miguel County seat of Grand Junction. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census, up from 1,903 at the 2000 census. Erie has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and is one of the oldest continuously occupied towns in the United States. The first European to visit Erie was Captain John Smith on his voyage down the Colorado River in 1769. General James K. Polk visited Erie in 1875 while on his way to fight Mexico during the American-Mexican War. The town was platted in 1886 and named after Sir George Brown of Canada who had donated land for its development. In 1896 Erie became a city with a population of 30,000 people. On July 4th, 2002, Mayor Rick Rinaldi announced that he would not seek re-election due to health concerns. The City of Erie erected a monument to Custer at Battle Creek National Battlefield which stands just outside of town on Ute Mountain Road
