The Evans Air Force Base Museum is home to the world's largest air force deployment gift history. The collection includes more than 2,500 military and civilian items from various periods of Evans' history. Air Force deployments have always been a part of Evans' cultural heritage. During World War II, the base hosted bomber and fighter aircraft from all over the United States. More recently, Evans has been home to the Colorado Air National Guard's 432nd Airlift Wing and its attached 135th Tactical Airlift Squadron. Many of the gifts in the museum come from individuals or organizations who have supported our military or diplomatic efforts in recent years. Evans is a small, unassuming town in Weld County, Colorado. It is located on the banks of the Little River and has a population of about 1,500. The name Evans comes from John Evans who settled there in 1859. The first post office was established in Evans in 1879. The town was founded by John Evans and his family after they homesteaded land along the Little River. They built a log cabin and named their community after themselves. In 1865, they built a gristmill which became the nucleus of the present day town. The mill closed in 1984 but is still standing as a museum with its original equipment still on display. The store at the corner of Main Street and US Highway 287 closed down in 1985 but is now used as an art gallery called "The Gallery". The building also houses a few apartments for rent on upper floors around the clock. In 1987, Evans had its first paved street and also got its first water tower which serves today as part of the local library system. The water tower was donated by Mr. Bob Gould who also donated land to house it. Since then, much has changed for Evans including becoming home to several high schools (including one that offers college-level courses), several businesses such as an outdoor clothing store, two movie theaters, and more than one dozen churches/synagogues or mosques across three denominations-.
