(JP) Evans was born on July 3rd, 1854 in Boston, Massachusetts into a prominent British family of Scottish descent. He first came westward as part of a large migration of Englishmen seeking opportunities at “the new land of opportunity” that began settling in Colorado after gold was discovered near Laughlin in 1862. With money available for investment and good land at an affordable price, many Scots quickly set up shop in what is now Rocky Mountain National Park – one of the most significant areas for English settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains). Evans was able to capitalize on this early boom by investing his profits back into his business operations while also establishing himself as a respected local figure both within his own community and among fellow Americans who had followed him westward years earlier. Over time he developed close personal relationships with many key leaders in Colorado’s nascent ecology and politics including Archibald MacLeish – one of America’s leading landscape architects – and John Atherton Moffat (1835-1916), founder of Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&GW). These interactions helped solidify JP Evans as one of Colorado’s most important entrepreneurs during this periodof rapid growth for the state economically and socially.
